Default Killer app: Game consoles contain hazardous chemicals

Game consoles contain hazardous chemicals

Quote:
"Whether game consoles are classified as toys or not, they can still contain hazardous chemicals and materials that could harm humans. The technology is available for the manufacturers to design out toxics and produce greener game consoles now," said Greenpeace's Dr. Kevin Brigden in a press release.

The report found that all three systems also contained significant levels of bromine, a chemical linked to impaired memory functions and other health problems. One of the phthalates found in the 360 and PS3, a chemical called DEHP, is also known to interfere with sexual development in mammals, especially males.

Hold on -- you don't need to start wearing a cup made of reinforced steel every time you play Halo 3 just yet. Greenpeace points out that the three console manufacturers have "avoided or reduced uses of individual hazardous substances in certain materials within their consoles." Nintendo's Wii showed no traces of beryllium in its electrical contacts, the Xbox 360 used fewer brominated materials in its housing materials and the PS3 circuit boards were bromine-free.
I thought this was interesting. I guess no more playing for me......NOT lol.

it was a prank article on a website that said about the ps3s nuclear reactor;

Playstation 3 Powered By Small Nuclear Reactor

Tokyo – Sony confirmed that a self-contained nuclear reactor would power the Playstation 3.

"The PS3 is a very powerful system," said Sony representative Toshio Iwaki. "We can't expect municipalities to build new power plants just so gamers can play hot new games. That's why we developed the proprietary PS3 Enriched Uranium Stick ™.

Sony denies accusations by parent groups who say this is all part of Sony's plan to create a generation of mutant super children. "Sure the games for the PS3 will be complex but regular kids will be able to play them. Mutant super children won't be needed until the PS5, so parents can rest easy," said Iwaki.

Sony created its own isotope of Uranium and enriched it using a special process to prevent third parties from developing replacements. Like the Xbox 360 the power supply will be extremely heavy because of the lead needed to shield users from harmful radiation.

The company has already begun reassuring customers about the safety of having a small nuclear reactor in your home. "We've started an ad campaign featuring The Simpsons that tells consumers that the PS3 is no more dangerous to your health than eating a double Quarter Pounder with cheese while driving a Ford Escort without your seat belt fastened while smoking an unfiltered Marlboro. I think most Americans will be comfortable with that risk."

Like the PS2, the PS3 will be illegal to export to certain rogue nations and suburbs.

lol That's just funny. The nuclear reactor article - not the hazardous materials... but I do find it funny that they single out game consoles and fail to tell you that ALL electronics from your cell phone to your coffee maker have these chemicals in them.

Everything electronic has toxic chemicals inside. Even regular batteries can leak dangerous chemicals. Anything electronic is not supposed to be thrown in the trash because those toxins leak and get into the ground then contaminate our water supplies. Cell phones have these same chemicals inside them along with the batteries they use. You are thinking about the dangers of the radiation or the transmission signals which has yet to be proven. You're more likely to be damaged when the battery explodes or catches on fire rather than the tiny amount of radiation they put out.

But the point is, all these chemicals are on the INSIDE of the gaming consoles so unless you break your PS3 open and start licking the Cell processor, I think you'll be okay.

The laser inside is capable of damaging retinas if looked at directly. If you were to take off the housing or mess with it, you could do permanent damage.

Ofcourse it would blind you if you looked at it directly. That's based on a persons choice lol. The article I posted has nothing to do with that. The console itself is made with chemicals and there is nothing you can do about that. It's two differnt things lol.

Yeah, the chemicals that greenpeace is whining about are found in many other common sources. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) we all know makes up plastic tubing and plastic coatings. Yes it can probably affect you, but like people have said already if your appetite consists of plastic then you're health is screwed. If this article bothers you about your health, just go wash your hands after you finish using your console or any other plastic for that matter.
The other chemicals that they listed were not actually chemicals, but natural elements found on the periodic table. Beryllium - used in the majority of circuits and alloyed with copper to make electrical contacts. Bromine - my guess would be that it is used as a flame retardant inside the console to keep it from catching fire or sparking.
Pthalates are the general name given to plastics derived from an acid called Pthalic acid - and these compounds are found in alot of other plastics than just game consoles. They make PVC elastic. Unless you're pregnant or an infant, you should be ok as long as you are doing what you should normally be doing, don't eat it, don't drink it, don't inject it, don't smoke it, and just wash your hands throughout the day (it's a good healthy practice).
