Default Video problem with Onkyo TX-SR875

I just received the 875 yesterday from J&R. I hooked up the PS3 & Comcast cable box(Motorola DCH3416) via HDMI to the 875. My TV is a bit old, Pioneer SD-532HD5, 1080i max, and only has component inputs, no HDMI. So I have component output from the 875 to the TV. I do plan on updating my TV, but not until the fall...anyhoo.

I set the 875 monitor output HDMI to "no" and max resolution to 1080i. My problem is that I get either a blue screen or a very brief picture, from both the PS3 & cable box. I have sound but no picture on both. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Considering that output via HDMI is not desired, I believe setting HDMI to "No" is correct.

Did you assign each HDMI input to an input selector in the setup menu? For example, if the cable box is plugged into HDMI Input 1, did you assign HDMI1 as CBL/SAT?

Is it even possible to output video via component when the input is HDMI?

Did that, no luck, but I did post this same question over at AVS, and Jordan even found the link But, as that thread states, HDCP stops the HDMI video signal from being down converted and passed to the component output...at least I can finally get 7.1 and all the other audio goodies.

"Honey, we need to upgrade the TV too!"

you should run the Component video directly from the player to the TV.

No need going through the receiver, which could actually hurt the overall quality.

If you do not notice any degredation then I guess it doesnt matter, but the potential is there with the analog signal.

That is why I run my HD DVR straight to my tv via component, it only goes up to 1080i anyway, then I run optical to the receiver. No downconverting to 720p for me.

If you want to use the receiver as a video switch, you'll have to connect the PS3 and the cable box to the receiver via component just as the output is connected.

Of course, you'll need an audio connection as well.
