Default Disney's It's a Small World - Jon Turteltaub to Direct

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Appropriate considering today is the 50th anniversary of the creation of the It’s A Small World attraction that has been such a staple of the Disney theme parks, the movie studio has hired Jon Turteltaub to direct a feature based on the venerable family film ride with the catchy tune. Jared Stern pitched Small World and will write the script. He, Turteltaub and The Lego Movie‘s Dan Lin will be the producers. This one will take awhile to come together but it is envisioned as a potential franchise for the studio. Turteltaub is coming off the CBS Films hit comedy Last Vegas, a movie that has grossed $134 million worldwide. For Disney, Turteltaub directed the first two installments of National Treasure and is working on a third with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Stern is repped by WME, managers Marc Provissiero and Helena Heyman and attorney Karl Austen, while Turteltaub is repped by WME, managed by David Lonner at Oasis and lawyered by Steve Warren.

How is this not a joke...? I mean, really?

Doesn't say animated - they're doing this live action?

Pirates of the Caribbean is great, and while there have been missteps turning Disneyland attractions into movies (Haunted Mansion, Country Bears), I'll wait and see what they do with this one.

They announced a couple years back they were turning Mr. Toad's Wild Ride into a movie. Haven't heard anything since, must not be happening.

My friends and I have decided the only way this works is if the movie is about the ride trapping and torturing people through the counties. A family friendly version of 'Saw'. But seriously, how is this real?

Most importantly, with Jon Turtletaub attached, how does this affect National Treasure 3?!

Yeah, in 2012 Disney announced they were putting out a live action/CGI mix:
Quote:
Disney has feature film plans for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, one of its longest-running theme park rides. The studio has set iconic commercials and video director Pete Candeland to develop a live-action/CGI mix feature that will bring to life a theme park ride that originated in Disneyland on its opening in 1955. The twisting, turning ride was also popular at Walt Disney World in Florida, but the geniuses at the park closed the ride in 1998 and replaced it with The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh, which by comparison is a 10-minute nap for parents. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is based on Disney’s adaptation of The Wind In The Willows. Tron: Legacy producer Justin Springer will produce Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and the studio is looking for a writer to draft the plot into a film. Disney, which turned its Pirates Of The Caribbean attraction into a billion-dollar feature franchise, has a version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea with David Fincher among several percolating projects inspired by theme park attractions.

The Verve-repped Candeland is best known for his work with animation and for creating and directing the music videos for The Gorillaz. He also worked with Paul McCartney to create a cinematic opening to The Beatles Rock Band for Harmonix.
Seems like they quietly dropped that one.

I do wonder how the movie will handle the overt stereotyping of the ride.

I'm a huge fan of Disneyland, and have gone many times since I was a kid. To this day this is the only ride I would choose to not go on if I were to visit today. I'd rather spend the entire day in Toon Town or subject myself to a continuous ride on the Tea Cups than go on this once.

I feel like I'm in the 5% of the world's population that loves the attraction. That said, I find this news very strange and think it reeks of desperation. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time Disney attempted a Small World movie (and to be honest, their previous attempt in the 70s sounded pretty interesting):

Haha, oh man, of all the rides. What, no one brought up Space Mountain?

When I first read about this, that's exactly how I imagined the movie would be.

I actually got stuck in that ride once before...
