How ironic I went to Best Buy to check out the Panny and Pioneer plasmas and there was a xbr4 mounted on the wall next to them. It also had a line on it. However, it was vertical right in the middle also had three dead pixels. My wife asked the salesman what that line was from and he said someone pressed on the screen. That will stray away a lot of potential buyers. Especially next to two top of the line plasmas

But you're not actually buying anything from Sony, and the same fine print applies just like any of the other outside companies. For instance they can repair or even replace at their disgression with whatever they deem to be a comparable TV. Does not have to be new, doesn't even have to be a Sony. They're all this way. I really hate the whole idea of doing business with these companies but for a TV that still costs around $3,000 I was willing to kick in for a year.
Best buy doesnt use an outside company....we have a specific are of employee set exactly for in home repair...some are based out of the bigger stores....as far as replacing the tvs under our plans....once its approved for junkout..the CUSTOMER picks whatever TV they want that is the same price of the tv they originally bought...so in this case it woulda been sony for sony...sony for panny...sony for samsung....the price must be equal tho as no money goes back for a lower price tv

Please make sure its not something completely stupid like light shinning thru the blinds onto the tv.... That happened to me with my XBR3. I noticed a very similar line and I couldn't figure out what it was. I turned the lights on, turned them off, I switched inputs, I turned the TV off and on, still had the lines. Then, since it was dark I opened the blinds to change out an HDMI cable and away went the line

I know its silly, but it freaked me out for almost 45min.

So.......I've never really had a problem with my XBR3. If you really do have a problem with it then you've got great luck..... or bad luck, however you want to look at it.

That 4 year service which (which is renewable after the first 4 years) is the reason I bought my TV from Best Buy.

I just got my other xbr4 in the mail. With sony you get a yr warranty I bought mine from a local electronics place in town called vanns. My tv after 6 months or so would turn off for no reason. If i unplugged it and plugged it back in it worked fine.So i contacted sony and they sent me a replacement then you send back the old one. They even pay the shipping to ship back the old one!(o a note u have 15 days to send it back or they charge your credit card the whole amount of the tv)So there custome service is great!

However they never seem to respond to emails for some reason.

As you mentioned though I hope it's not something I'm doing that’s creating the problem cause the chances of this happening to me twice is just absurd. The HD DVR is hooked up via hdmi/componet or composite video, which ever the red and green hook up is so maybee thats it. Hell, at this point though the damage is already done, so any adjustments might be for nothing. Damn damn , damn
aod38 had an interesting comment. Seems he had a similar issue from a defective HDMI cable. If you have another HDMI cable you can swap with it, that might be good to try. Better still, did you try the direct RF input on the set? Then you eliminate the external tuner/BD player/HDMI cable/HDMI connectors from the equation. If watching content on the direct RF input results in the same issue, then it is for sure the set. Now the only question still remaining is did you get two defective sets in a row or is there a setup issue creating the problem? Its really hard to say. I'd say if you get a third set and still have the same problem, then there MUST be a problem with the setup as that would be 1,000,000 to 1 chance if this is a 1% defect issue from Sony.

Crap, yesterday I was watching Kill Bill on Blu ray when I noticed a vertical line on the right side of my screen. it is about 2 inches long and depending on whats on it looks green or red. Anyone know what may cause this. I do have an extended service paln from Sony Style, but man that sucks.

I did a ton of research before my XBR4 purchase and there doesn't seem to be a widespread problem with the unit like the one you describe. I would easily bet that the problem lies somewhere else. Is the line there when you connect via different inputs? Do you have a power conditioner?

I would check all the connections to make sure it is a panel problem. I've owned a 46" XBR4 since they first came out and it's been rock solid. I did not buy the extended support contract because my feeling is LCD's do not break in the first year then it should last and last. At least that is my experience with every LCD that I have owned. It's weird to read about all these problems.

Well since then I added a Pio Kuro to my HT and moved the XBR to my living room. It took 3 Pio's to get a good one. But that's a different story. Anyway, I think the XBR is still and excellent LCD.

You got a defective Television due to misuse, or a just a defective model. But, I can tell you not all are like this. I've generally had very good experience with Sony. The only problems I've had has been a malfunctioned PS3 and a pair of noise cancelling headphones that have stopped working on one side and continue to work in the other. I've bought numerous things from Sony and have been very pleased with their service. This is one of the best TVs on the market, so say what you want about yours but this is a great TV.

Sony just foot the bill on optical block for my XBR1 last week. One phone call to them and to authorized repair shop, it's all done. Just need to calibrate it again.

I do experience this problem even when using other inputs. I do not have a power conditioner.
