This is worth a read http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-en...n-9069558.html Sheldon Hall's book Zulu: With Some Guts Behind It is being revised for a new edition later this year. The original edition is excellent and now you won't have to pay the silly prices on Amazon for a copy

Hmm, that would be an option. Which vintage films have Paramount scanned at 4K? I can only think of Rosemary's Baby. And Zulu is only a UK property for Paramount. What they have is a 65mm preservation negative made from the horizontal 8-perforation 35mm Technirama camera negative. The 65mm neg was used for the Blu-ray. I assume that this was done in 2K. Zulu would look amazing in 4K DCP (higher would be even better!) so maybe Paramount are going that route. Here's hoping.

The closer we get to release date with no information, the more I think this is just a repackaged, if there was something new why wouldn't they be saying something? Hope i'm wrong but feels like another cynical marketing exercise!

I recently spoke with Sheldon Hall at Bradford WideScreen Weekend. He is of the opinion it is just a repackage job.

I have a small glimmer of hope that it could be the same transfer without the DNR. A new print is probably out of the question, but I assume they would keep a copy of the original unaltered scan somewhere before they sprinkle it with all that waxy magic.
To those in the UK, I would be very thankful for some reports! Alot of times it seems, at least for American blu-rays that were botched, the remaster slides under the radar and you really have to do the research to seek out the new version. |

According to the BBFC the original cinema release was cut but no details -"This work was cut. To obtain this category cuts were required but the details are not available." But the website says every home release since the VHS is uncut

Thanks for the replies, this is what someone wrote on amazon as part of their review,
"Because this version of the film, like one of Surgeon Reynolds's unfortunate patients, has had the knife taken to it. In one of the most thrilling scenes Swiss Corporal Schiess, nursing a bandaged leg, leaves the relative safety of the hospital and launches on a solo rampage, bludgeoning Zulu warriors with his crutch and bayoneting them left, right and centre. Coming to Chard's rescue at the crucial moment, as John Barry's rousing music soars, Schiess's wild killing spree culminates in a quite extraordinary climax with his turning triumphantly to the camera, laughing deleriously at the slaughter with a hideous and terrifying glee. I don't remember anything quite like it in the whole of cinema but now the memory is all that is left because the Paramount censor has taken it upon himself to clean up not just the print but also its content" Just wanted to see if anyone had heard of this. ![]() Also Amazon has running time of 133 minutes, IMDB says 138 minutes and play says 138 minuites ![]() Last edited by Coogans Bluff; 05-14-2014 at 12:50 PM. |
