Default Speaker Wire and Install Questions - Reciever to 5.1 System

Let me start by saying I am a complete novice at home theater install, but I have taken the time to read reviews and reactions to the different audio components needed for a decent setup. Here is what I have accumulated:

Onkyo 605
Polk CS1 Center
Polk Monitor 50 Fronts
Polk psw10 Sub
Polk Monitor 30 Rears

My goal was to get a 5.1 setup which I have accomplished. Now all that is left is to get the system installed. My questions relate to speaker wire and connection. I plan to purchase the following speaker wire:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

and banana plugs:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

The speaker wire is rated for in wall and my speaker wire will be strung up on the wall via cable wall ties. Is it necessary to purchase the in wall or can I go with the following speaker wire:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

I also am not sure about the banana plugs as they sell both closed screw (above link) and open screw:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

I plan on ordering 100 feet of wire as the room the system will be in is about 10*20. I also plan on ordering at least 24 banana plugs (12 pair). Do you think I will have enough cable? Is it wise to order extra banana plugs? How do you install the cable onto the plugs? I know these are probably very simple questions, but I want to get everything in place before I do the install. Thanks in advance.

Either wire will work fine...what color will hide better
I personally prefer these type of plug http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
I find them easier to connect as well as the fact the wire exits from the bottom not the back.

As far as how much cable...measure up and around anything in the way to getting to the surrounds.
I needed to add about 20 feet to mine to go up and down the sides of my sliding doors. 100 ft sounds shy to me but check the runs you need and dont leave your lines too short to move things around when your done.

didnt work for me either...mmmmm
It was supposed to take you to your second choice in bannana plugs.
The one with the hole in the middle and the back that screws to loosen or tighten. You simply strip a short piece. put it into the hole and tighten down the rear screw. This will lock the copper wire into place.

I would go with some flat speaker wire on the surrounds to hide it.

Please try to update the thread as you soon as you can when your system is rolling I am actually scoping out the same exact Polk combo, but on the fence about getting the CS2 & 60 and not worrying about the surrounds for now.

By the way, have you checked out your sub yet??? I know the connectors on the PSW10 are different from the PSW12. Does yours have a RCA like red/white type single plug in, or does it have two old school separate wire like ends that fit into slots?

Thanks

I decided against the cs2 and 60 purely on price. At my budget, I could not afford to go with those components and still maintain a 5.1 setup.

I have not ordered the psw10 yet. I was planning on purchasing it and the monitor 50's from Amazon at the same time. I just recently purchased the monitor 30's for $120 from Amazon. The deal is still available I think. I have to rearrange my living room to get the setup just right so I am a little delayed on actually purchasing the components.

I'm not sure about the connections on the psw10, maybe someone else can comment. I also have not gotten any feedback on the type of speaker wire to use and whether I should or can use in wall to hang on my wall.

I can personally vouch for the quality of the banana plugs...they are wonderful.

In wall ratings are for passing inspections. If you are having a room built and are subject to inspection, then you must get the in wall rated cables.

If your house is built and you are installing yourself, then the sky is the limit.

The odds of a speaker cable causing your house any REAL damage are sooooooo freaking slim it is not even funny. You would have a better chance at winning the lottery 6 times in a row by yourself.

Hope this helped.

later.

Enjoy your new rig,
