Granted this first adaptation left much to be desired, but I LOVE Louise Fletcher and she was wonderful in this role. She always was an incredible performer. Day one for me just to have in my collection to revisit now and again. Especially now that Lifetime is adapting the entire V.C. Andrews Dollanganger series. Except for the 5th and final novel; "Garden of Shadows." If y'all haven't read the books you definitely should. As for the Lifetime series of films, I was surprised to see they were only headed for DVD as opposed to bluray, but considering the day one price of $8.99 you can't really complain. Especially when it didn't take long for 'Flowers' to drop to $6.99 lol. It still baffles me that people boycott these novels and these adaptations in 2014 due to the material and yet they have no problem with their kids watching crap like 'Jersey Shore' and the Kardashians.

The new adaption of Flowers was more faithful to the book, but I thought the original had FAR more Gothic atmosphere and style (and a great score by Christopher Young.) And while the great Ellen Burstyn did an admirable job as The Grandmother, Louise Fletcher owned the role with a stern malice that only she could exude. I so regret we didn't get to see Wes Craven's version (Which the original started out as, and kept some of his script ideas, such as the ending.)
Day One for me. |

As for the 5th novel, there hasn't been anything officially confirmed about them not adapting it. However, since last year when Lifetime announced they were adapting the Dollanganger series, they never included the final book; "Garden of Shadows." And the only reason I could logically come up with is the following: 1 - The novel itself is a prequel story that spans over 40 years and so that alone would be VERY difficult to adapt properly to do it any sort of justice. 2 - The other aspect to it that may come into play here is that V.C. Andrews died prior to officially completing the novel and so Andrew Neiderman was brought on to use her notes to complete the 5th book. He has subsequently gone on to complete and continue a variety of her other book series and so perhaps another factor in not adapting this one to film is they may need his approval as he is technically a co-author of the final book. Those are the 2 most logical and main reasons I can think of as to why Lifetime may not adapt the final novel. I personally think it is more the first reason I mentioned simply because from what I understand, Lifetime has hired Neiderman to be a consultant for the Dollanganger adaptations and so if that is true I don't see why he wouldn't just give the okay and agree to have them adapt the last book. But again you are talking about a story that is told over 4 decades and that would take a great deal of preparation and money to tell it properly. We'll have to wait and see. I just can't wait for the next two adaptations ![]() Hope my response helps in some way or at least provides some interesting bullet points that will serve as a means to open up further dialogue! |

So, I was checking out Image Entertainment's website for more info about the upcoming Blu-ray release, and it says the run time for the Blu-ray is 91 minutes, while the run time for the DVD is 93 minutes. Sigh. I really hope it isn't edited

The Lifetime movies rush so insanely fast through the books. Ironic as the characters should feel imprisoned.
I think they are waiting to see how ITBT and SOY do before committing to Garden Of Shadows. They have also said they are going to do VC Andrews stand-alone novel My Sweet Audrina. |

As thrilled as I am that Lifetime is adapting the Dollanganger series, I feel that we won't ever truly get a proper adaptation of these novels until either HBO or Showtime invest in getting hold of the rights to the property. Both of those entities can get away with so much more and I feel they could touch on the themes of incest and rape much clearer. The gothic nature of the novels is what the original film had that I feel the Lifetime version was lacking, and between HBO or Showtime we could be in for something really close to what we got from the novels. Until then though, I certainly give Lifetime credit for taking a chance on these. Can't wait for the next two entries and see how they do with them. Especially "Seeds of Yesterday", very curious to see Darren Stein's take on the material and how he translates it to screen. I loved his work on "Jawbreaker" and his recent film; "G.B.F."
