Default Should I set my speakers to large or small

I had the house to myself last night so decided to mess about with my Denon 2808 settings. My amp has been setup using the calibration mic provided. The mic decided that my main speakers FL FR were Large and the C,SL,SR,SBL,SBR were all small. I've been running with this setup for the last 6 months but messed around last night and set them all to Large and to me the sound was fuller. When an amp selects a speaker as being small what is it actually doing to the signal being sent to the speaker?

So my system now runs with all speakers set to Large and all speakers crossing over to the sub at 80Hz. To me this sounds better but would like to hear how other people have their amps set

Sound and Picture is personal preference as opinions are relative. Thats the reason why there are so many different pre-set configurations on your receiver and TV as its up to you to find what works best and it looks like you have found it.

I have my front 3 set to large, and the rears set to small and x-over at 80HZ. Funny thing is when I did the Audissy set-up on my Onkyo 805, it set my center to small and everything else to large. The reason why I changed it because my center right now is my most powerfull speaker. I have a Definitive C/L/R 2500 which has two 5.25's, a tweeter, and an 8" 150 watt powered sub! I thought it was funny that in and auto set-up it would set that to small???

I noticed the same thing when I first performed an Audissy setup my center was set to large performed it again and it was set to small? Also the subs settings were way out

I also noticed setting all speakers to Small with a 80Hz crossover and then setting all to Large with a 80Hz crossover sounded different (the later being better). I dont really understand why that would be?

Setting speakers to Large should disable the 80hz crossover.

Apparently, the "large" and "small" setting refers to the frequency response range, not the physical dimensions of the speaker box or size of the speaker elements. So "large" setting from the amp will send out a broader signal. BTW, I do not claim to be an expert on this subject, but hope this is might help?

Yes, unless your speakers are some pretty capable floor speakers, or something like DefTech's with the built in subwoofer, you will want to set your speakers to small. It is changing the range of sound that it sends to your speakers. A "large" speaker is one that as previously stated can reproduce sound normally reserved for the subwoofer. I don't imagine that you could really damage speakers this way, but I suppose it's possible. For best results, or if you just don't know, set your speakers to small, and let the subwoofer do the work God intended for it. This does not mean you should set your speakers to large if you don't have a subwoofer.

Large mean it send the full Resolution the speakers. Not a lot of speaker can reproduce the whole range in world.

Small mean that the AVR is cutting to the hz you've setup up. Change are that you're sub bass is better than you're speaker bass. And not to overload the speaker setting it to Small is a good thing.

Personnally i prefer Small + 80hz, because when i use Prologic IIx for my music the bass is sent to my sub and sound more coinvecing than by themselfve..

My 94thx MCACC sets to large, I have 4 towers and not so small surround backs. I haven't tested the small setting, only because that only seems weird to me. Big speakers set to small, althought THX recommends setting to small.
