Default Is it really just better to buy a sturdy stand alone BD player?

I really don't like the ps3--it looks fragile and it broke last night too. I'm thinking of buying a stand alone BD player so it may not break down as frequently as the ps3 does--and I had it only for about five months and only watched about 20 BD's on it! Didn't even use it for games!
My question is: how's the durability of these stand alone players like the Panasonic DMP BD-30 compared to the ps3? Are they more sturdy and not prone to breaking down every few months? How's playback?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had my PS3 for over a year, watched over a hundred Blu-ray movies, played games on it for tens of hours, and never had any problem at all.

Is your PS3 adequately ventilated? I have plenty of space around mine to avoid it getting hot.

I've played way too many movies on my 60gb and some games here and there with no issues"knock on wood" but sometimes I would like a standalone that can bitsteam so I could see the lovely DTS Master Audio or Dolby Tru-HD emblem on my receiver shine like a glorious light from heaven.

I enjoy my standalone better, but the PS3 is a great unit. HDD failure is one concern of the ps3 that you dont have with a standalone.

If you want it for media and games, use the ps3. If the device is only for movies, a BD30/BD50 would be a good choice along with a Sony or Samsung 1500.

No issues with my 60g....had it for thirteen months now.....my son plays COD4 every day on it.

Someone made a comment about HDD failure.....if that happens, it's easily replaceable.

Love the PS3.

I'm not trying to bash the ps3 or anything, but I don't want to fix it only to have it suddenly break down on me for no apparent reason--I mean, I treated it like a baby.
All I want to know is that besides the loading time and firmware updates, a stand alone can be could choice because I'm only interested in watching movies, right?

The answer to your question is yes. But, at the same time, I must point out that what happened to your PS3 is statistically a very rare scenario! In fact, I am actually curious to know if the failure rate of standalone units even comes close in comparison to the PS3. Hmmmm.....

I got my 60gb a few weeks after the original release and have had no problems what-so-ever.

If I could only say that for the Sony XBR (bulb blew yesterday).

I got my Lego Indy and have to wait until I can 'see' again (bulb should be arrive today).

Is 60GB PS3 better than the 40GB (performance wise)? Or just 20 extra gigs?

I have a stand alone player, and I picked up the PS3 on June 1st. The PS3 is so much nicer as BD player than the stand alone.

I have had my PS3 almost 1 year and have watched over 100 movies on it. Have never even had a hiccup with it. It has been flawless. My Samsung BD-P1000 and HD DVD players? Not so much. I recommend the PS3 to anybody that wants a fast, reliable BD player that is full featured.

Sounds like he got a bad unit. I have about 750 hours of run time between games and movies. About 1000 hours of being on doing nothing.

PS3, by almost all accounts, is one of the very best electronic units there has ever been. They fail in about 1% of cases, and the industry standard is around 3 or 4%.

If yours broke that quick, you broke it, or you got really unlucky.

Well the Blu-ray lens can fail on all BD-Players so that can happen. I had my PS3 for a Year and didn't have problems. I have my BD30 for 6months and don't have any trouble with it too so. Tought my friend PS3 failed 2 times (PSU both times) it's new one has been working for a while now
