Default Pioneer Kuro or a projector

I currently own a Pioneer Kuro 720p, but am seriously considering purchasing a 1080p projector in the $2,500-3,000 range. How would the PQ compare with the Kuro for a projector in this range?

Are you able to keep the Kuro for tv and what not? Just use the projector for movies.

I would keep both, do a pull down or motorized screen so you can use the plasma during the day, and the projector at night or for movies!!! In that price range I would do the Sony VPLVW40. Mount the plasma on the wall and have the screen come down in front of it

I love Kuros and I think that they are the best displays of any kind on the market. That said, nothing is immerses you like a projector.

I'd likely be selling my Kuro if I were to get a projector. With the Kuro widely being considered to best display on the market I was just wondering how much PQ I'd be losing in terms of black levels, color etc. I have to admit the prospect of watching a movie on a 100"+ screen seems like it might be worth any tradeoff.

What sized Kuro is it? if it's 50+ inches, at 720p, I think a 100" 1080p will be close.... but projectors are really nothing like Televisions.... a purist would say "Projector or nothing" though......

Depends what you're looking for.... if you're going to use it for T.V. and normal, everyday viewing.... then sticking with the t.v. might be a better idea.

It will be used nearly exclusively for movies, so I might have to give a projector a try.

Projector, definitely. Grab an AE2000 from CostCo, get a Da-Lite High Power screen, and give it a shot.

Any decent projector will look better in 1080p than it would in 720p simply due to sheer size.

I'd assume MOST projectors will look better in 1080p rather than 720p, but none the less.... Size, resolution, and seating distance, all need to be factored..... I would love 1080p because I have very good eyesight as well.... but I'll tell you right now I'm sitting 9 feet or so from my 37" Aquos 720p, and it looks great to me.... COULD I tell a difference with 1080p..... maybe... maybe not.... My wife has given the go-ahead for a 720p projector.... and at $1,200 less than any 1080p projector I can find.... I'd say it's a deal....

Besides... I'd rather put that $1,200 into buying a single Channel amp.

It's in the details. From corduroys to text to plaid shirts to window blinds.

O.K..... I'm wearing corduroys right now...... can you see the the texture in them???? NOPE.... Because you're TOO FAR AWAY.... that's my point.... I'll be at a Viewing distance of 15-17 feet..... I'm in the "recommended" range for 720p, but I may, or may not be able to distinguish 1080p at that distance... I'm betting I could... but it probably won't be Night-and-Day...

I'm not an idiot.... I know there's more detail, DEFINITION in 1080p compared to 720p.... I understand the principal.... I just don't know if I have the need for it..... Video isn't too important to me.

EDIT:

I guess I should have mentioned that my 9 feet current viewing distance from the 37" is a different room (will be different house ) than the projector...... which will be 15-17 feet as I've said...

Just a (hopefully) helpful suggestion. Since you are somewhat still in the planning stage, why sit so far away? I'm using a seating distance of 9' from a 100" diagonal, and viewing 1080p. I find it very satisfying and immersive. Not sure how happy I would be dropping down to 720p and then sitting that much farther away. Understandable if physical limitations of the room are restricting you to that viewing distance, but if at all possible I would try to set things up so that I could shave off some of that distance.

Also, if we are talking about a dedicated media room, having 15 to 17 feet to work with gives you some options on another whole row of seating. Man I wish I had that kind of space to work with My 9' viewing distance is all the space I have, but I'm happy with it in terms of picture quality. It would be really nice to be able to seat more people, have a place for the popcorn machine, the keg cooler that I want, etc.

I'm looking at moving back down south next summer, and having exactly the right sized room for my home theater will be a huge consideration when I go house shopping. I got into the hobby since I've been living here, so I could only make-do with what I had.

I'm with Don of Alaska on this one. Why so far back?

I've done a test projection of 11 feet wall-to-wall (projector one side and the screen the other) with a 97" screen and sitting about five/six feet away from the screen using the Panasonic PT-AE2000. The reason was to accommodate the possible 7.1 speakers placement.

Simply put, the image looks great and is very immersive. At that distance, I did not see the screen-door effect which is to say that the projector is getting all the credit. And at that 11 feet distance, 97" is the maximum screen size for a 16:9 ratio. If you're going for constant height screens and your wall is wider than longer, you can get a bigger screen for 2.40 AR movies.

As George Lucas said, sound is 50% of the experience. So I say if you want the slam bang audio components, get that first. Then upgrade to a 1080p projector. Or do the reverse.

Mostly I'll sit this far away because it'll give me the room to really space out the 7.1 system..... although not "slam bam" I've got B&W's all the way around (703, 705, HTM7, and DS7's) with a Def tech 14" reference sub..... I would rather spend less (720p) on the projector, and move to separates in the future.... besides.... my wife doesn't think I need a projector at all, and when I told her I could get one for $1,000 she was all for it (not so enthusiastic when I mentioned $3,000) The room basically has NO RESTRICTIONS.... so elevated seating (DIY job I'm sure) will certainly be in the works!

Thanks for the concern!
