I'm thinking 15-17 feet...... I found a lot of DIRT CHEAP 720p projectors too.... so it makes the wife happy to know I can shoot well below the budget.... so that might help make my case!

I'm inclined to agree. If you think about the emotional impact of a film, most of it is a reaction to audio cues. A scary sequence in a horror movie is nothing without the audio. Good surround sound is immersive and draws the viewer into the movie in a way that video cannot.

I've kind of built my "home entertainment" system backwards, as I inherited pieces of it from my late brother in law. We wound up getting his 36" Sony CRT (great picture for a CRT) and his (today) 10 year old BOSE 5.1 Acoustimass speaker system. I then patched in a 400 series Sony receiver (no HDMI)that I bought open box from Circuit City. Factor in an open box Polk subwoofer (as the Bose system is passive bass), this was more than adequate for 5.1 DD/DTS from SD DVDs.
After purchasing my 50" Panasonic plasma in April and more recently a BD-10A from EBay, I learned to abandon DD/DTS and hook up the multichannel analog outs to get the most out of BD movies. Though not HDMI, it is quite an improvement and more than adequate for the time being (money is tight). I would agree that audio is very important, but I tip my hat slightly toward a better TV first...though I made sure to get the best out of my current AVR ![]() |

I still don't understand why so many people think better speakers always = louder...... it's not really like that at all.... of course I like to turn it up a bit.... but I've seen people with $200 samsung HTIB who listen to their setup louder than I do...... but mine sounds 1,000 better.......

Although I can bring the heat - I like to turn it down a bit especially when I listen to music - my mind is more envolved and I pick up subtle things that I wouldn't with playing speakers loud (this is one of the reasons I still use a DBX 3BX III).

Either way... after listening to it, believe it or not, I think I'd prefer the t.v. speakers.... at least for watching television... maybe it's a little better with a movie, but I watched a movie, and kept thinking to myself that the sound was "off" but he certainly was playing it LOUD..... It wasn't a movie that has a great soundtrack (Beerfest) but I thought the movie was funny... but yeah... the sound.... yikes. Like I said, it works for him, so that's great. If my TVs and Surround Setups disappeared tomorrow.... no blu, no receiver, nothing.... and I had to start all over, I'd start with a PS3 capable of SACD (only until I could get a stand-alone SACD) with a 7.1 AVR capable of HDMI, and I'd probably get a nice pair of tower speakers..... I'd listen to 2-channel audio until I could justify a 32" T.V. then I'd probably add center, then surrounds, then sub, then rears (for cheaper) then Turntable, and then all the other goodies I have, until my audio was "complete" then I'd upgrade to a bigger display. Many would probably run out to get the biggest HDTV they could, but I'd go NUTS without any audio. Actually I may use the "excuse/opportunity" to get separates ![]() |

I was into audio before there were "home theaters". Sound quality was always more important. I have about 5k invested in my audio equipment - half of that on speakers/subwoofer. I only have 2k into my tv.
