Exclamation PS3 Audio question?

Does the ps3 output DTS master audio or true hd etc through its HDMI output? if it doesnt is there any kind of upgrade that could be done in order to get HD audio from the ps3?

yes it does.

Set the PS3 to Linear PCM, and hit the "select" or "display" button on the PS3 BD remote.

make sure you have the latest firmware update as dts-hd master decoding was recently added. (dolby truehd has been since day 1)

you should be able to just update straight from the PS3. Do you have it setup wifi or wired to the internet?

just go to system update.

Wired to the internet, the ps3 isnt mine im enquiring for a friend as he wanted to change his amp for HD sound etc so yes thatll be fine, connect via the internet, i dont think hes done any firmware downloads since hes had it so if he downloads the very latest firmware will he have to also download previous ones in order to get the hd audio or should the latest one do the trick?

the latest one includes everything.

...also, make sure your friend does not turn the power off during a firmware update. This will cause problems.

updating the firmware is a two step process so allow it to fully complete.

step one is to download the update.

step two is to 'install' the update.

the PS3 does all of this for you, but you will have to select a couple options along the way.

Can you burn the firmware to a disc then put it in the ps3? like you can do with stand alone players? or does it have to be connected to the internet?

...it doesnt specifically say it, but you can burn it to dvd+/-r discs. (make a data disc and load the PS3 folder that contains the other folders and burn away)

you just need a receiver that supports HDMI audio and can process multichannel PCM.

what receiver do you have at the moment?
