Most movies have real problems with historical accuracy. I recommend documentaries if you're interested in getting a sense of the history.

Hey guys, why does no one mention "Das Boot", which is my personal favourite. I thought this movie was even popular in the states...

I prefer the much longer TV Cut of the film. Unfortunately this version has not been restored with the same care as the Director's Cut, which looked and sounded much better.

Hopefully they bring it to Blu Ray very soon...

Revolutionary War: John Adams, The Patriot
American Civil War: Gone with the Wind, Glory
Spanish American War: The Wild Bunch
WWI: Sgt. York, All Quiet on the Western Front, Lawrence of Arabia, Legends of the Fall
WWII: Many- Patton, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Das Boot, Bridge on the River Kwai, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Battle of Britain, A Bridge too Far, The Guns of Navarone, Mister Roberts, The Longest Day, Midnight Clear, The Dirty Dozen, Tora Tora Tora
Vietnam: Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket

The above are all from the conflicts involving the United States. There are many excellent ones from other conflicts like Master and Commander. Only about half are available on Blu-ray.

That was Spanish American war/Mexican American war.

Also, as someone pointed out, The Alamo was Mexican Vs Texas before Texas joined the union.

Sticking to movies...

The Patriot
Saving Private Ryan
Black Hawk Down
Braveheart
United 93
The Kingdom
We Were Soldiers (not a fan of Vietnam movies)
300 (took too many liberties to go higher on this list in this context)

Plenty of other good ones but these are the ones I liked recently.

Consider this a public service:

The Crossing
Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor

(Rent any one of these as needed, the next time you try mythologizing 80's Al Pacino megaflops or Roland Emmerich films, just out of a basic insecurity to keep up your end of the conversation.)
