Revolution - not a lot to choose from, but I'll pick The Patriot
Civil War - Outlaw Josey Wales
WWI - Gallipoli
WWII - way too many to choose from, so I'll pick Sands Of Iwo Jima or Saving Private Ryan
Vietnam - Full Metal Jacket

Just for the record, The Alamo had nothing to do with the Mexican American War. The battle of the Alamo was in 1836 & was a key point in the war for Texas independence from Mexico. Texas was a sovereign nation until it joined the U.S. by treaty in 1845. The Mexican American War took place from 1846-1848.

Do you mean by which war or by which war movie? If it is by which war, then mine would be WWII. There are to many to name but some would be:

1) Saving Private Ryan
2) Midway
3) Band of Brothers
4) Patton

If it is by which movie, then mine would be:

1) We Were Soldiers
2) Saving Private Ryan
3) Band of Brothers
4) Platoon
5) Midway

I really like Three Kings (not really a war movie but it takes place around a war) and Jarhead. Both of those are really relevant. Everybody is forgetting MASH and The Deer Hunter. Plus, Black Hawk Down didn't take place during a war.

The question was by major American War (Revolution, Civil, WW, WWII) and then by minor wars (Spanish American, Mexican American, Vietnam, Korea, 1812, etc), and I reposted it in the Movies and TV forum. For some reason I could not delete this thread

I am trying to build a collection that shows a good HISTORICAL depiction of the wars and maybe the times around it...

Mine were;

Revolution: The Patriot
Civil War: Gettysberg
WWI: All quiet on the western front
WWII: Letters from Iwo Jima

I had nothing for Spanish/Mexican, 1812, etc...

How could you call WWI and WWII "American Wars"?! They were wars that originated in Europe and Asia and spilled over and dragged the US into them years after they started.

Also, how could you possiblely call Vietnam a "minor war". It is the most polarizing was of the 20th century. The most polarizing war until 2003 Iraq.

There are two ways of thinking about "war" movies. Movies that show combat, and movies that show the physcological and emotional toll of war.

Jarhead is a very under appreciated film. One of my new favorites. Platoon is classic. Great Raid is a very well done movie. Apparently Clint Eastwood made a movie about the invasion of Grenada.

Forrest Gump is as much a Vietnam movie as Legends of the Fall is a World War I movie. Just because the war takes place in the movie does not make it a war movie.
