Does anybody know if the rule about only being able to download the update once to enable playback on this BWU-100A burner is true?
Also, how does the downloading know this? Does it recognize my burner? or my IP address? If I fail downloading the update on one computer, could I install the burner on another computer and try to download the update for playing BD movies on another computer? (Below is the subject of my question) http://sony.storagesupport.com/BDupg...hardware.co.uk "Beginning in October, Sony will provide purchasers of the BWU-100A Blu-ray Disc Rewritable drive with an upgrade to the CyberLink PowerDVD software which will provide BD-ROM compatibility. This upgrade, which has been previously unavailable, will be offered free of charge as an electronic download. Customers will only have one (1) opportunity to download the PowerDVD upgrade electronically. If the download fails for any reason or the download is abandoned by the customer, a physical CD-ROM version of the upgrade will be available for a nominal charge by contacting the Sony technical support department in the country from where you purchased the BWU-100A product." I don't really know much about computers but I know that some browsers used when downloading fail to 'sign' the tag (if that's the right phrase) to acknowledge that the download has been accepted.
For example, I use 'Legalsounds' on very rare occasions (which is a Russia based music service). Each purchased track can only be downloaded once according to the website and if I download them at home on to my Mac using Safari then the tracks disappear from my download list. However, I can download them as many times as I like at work where we have MS machines running ie6. This to me says that it may be possible to download this software more than once. Could you get a mate to download the software and chuck it on a CD for you? |

I think when I try to download the update, it asks for the key # printed on the CD software that came with my burner.
I just asked the person I bought it from, if he already used the key # and downloaded the update(for enabling BD-ROM's[movies] to play on the burner) It got me thinking or rather very worried, that if he already downloaded the update on his computer, and used the key, am I going to be able to download it now, as a secondary user? As far as getting a friend to download it, I dont know of anyone who could. It sounds like it would be the same as me doing it, unless of course, I knew he knew a lot more about computers than I do, or at least he has downloaded this update before. Believe it or not I am the only person I know that is in to this. I even got the 8 foot screen w/projector to really take advantage of Hi-def blu-ray. Also, I dont know what you mean, by on safari, the songs disappear, but on IE 6, you can download as many times as you want. Are you saying that I could download as many times as I want, because I use MS, IE7? What about Firefox? Essentially, it is my belief, that with all the HDCP and AACS? BS, trying to prevent copying, even backing up, and in this case actually playing a disc, I find it hard to imagine how Sony, etal. would overlook one browser allowing more than the 1 attempt download, especially since the Sony update website asks for the individual software key, before being able to download the update. Of course I wish it was possible to download more than once, especially, considering, that I am going to buy and build a new computer in 1-2 months, but how exactly to download the update more than once, you have to explain more, please if you could, I would love to hear it. On the downloads page the purchased tracks are available for a single download (i.e. once the track is downloaded it disappears from the list). If I download a track with ie6 it doesn't disappear and I can download it repeatedle, however if I use Firefox or Safari the track disappears immediately. So, I can download to my machine at work (ie6) and download it again at home (Safari) without having to purchase the track twice. |

But I dont want to download repeated times. I just want to download once, or at least as many times as I will be installing this burner into a computer.
However, because I bought my burner used, I am suspecting that the key # the upgrade process is asking me for, is going to say, this key # has already had its 1 time limit download of the burner playback enablement upgrade. I haven't tried, so I cant say for sure. Its just my suspicion. The reason Im waiting, is because I have to build/buy a new computer. I read somewhere that my Pentium 4, of 2.8Ghz, would be sufficient to run the burner, at least just for playing, but apparently not from the Cyberlink BD Advisor Tool, here. . .file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/SANO%20SA%20WS3/Desktop/CLDetect_SANO-SA-WS3_2007_05_30_18_25_21.html Whats more perplexing is that it says my display is not HDCP compliant, even though I think, from all the reading and verifying that it is. In summation, I have to ask you again. Are you saying that I could download the upgrade for enabling playback on my burner, as many times as I want, if I use IE6? What about IE 7? That is what Iam using now. Also, if I do manage to download the upgrade, will I be able to take the file, and save it on a CD and then download and install it on another computer with the more acceptable Core 2 duo cpu and appropriate Graphics card/driver etc.? |
