This shit is funny as hell.
The background is Cal wants to upgrade the football stadium. A bunch of idiots got in their heads that they would climb into a group of oak trees and cause trouble for everyone. Today a judge ruled that the trees could be cut down, so they are having a shitfit. (not safe for work) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FZwUcoejWI So, right now, there is an old crazy lady who is on a ten foot pool in a little box that is attached to and above a redwood tree. No shit, her "name" is Dumpster Muffin" ![]() Then yesterday one of the tree sitters named "Millipede" bit a person removing their tree house/camp. She was dragged down and arrested. Turns out she is just some rich chick who found a cause. She dropped out of college to take part in a hunger strike. It did not work ![]() At the strike (bald head on the left) ![]() Believe it or not, this girl went to a highschool in San Francisco that costs $30,000 a year. ![]() For the past two days the tree sitters have been trying to throw their own shit and piss on the tree cutters who are taking down their camp... They saved it up for weeks ![]() The whole event is being run by a guy named "Running Wolf" who has been at the grove all day screaming at the the cops. Around 4pm, a guy climbed a phone pole and jumped into a tree with a fire extinguisher. ![]() They have been in the trees 18 months. Dumpster Muffin. No shit, google news it |

Wow, I love those tree hugging hippies. If they are so worried about it, why aren't they out planting 5 more trees for every one that is being cut down. Or they could be building irrigation systems for places that normally don't get water to grow more trees there. Or does that require too much effort?

It's still a better plan then fighting a lost cause. Most of the time protestors just end up in jail, and the project goes through. End result, no gain. If they at least spend more time doing other things that involve actual gain, then in 20 years, there would be more trees instead of less. Yes, it's nice and all that they are making a stand, but there are times when you give up the lost cause, and do something active instead of reactive.

Protest sparked the start of this country on December 16, 1773 Protest started the women's suffrage movement. Protest gave us the civil rights movement. I wouldn't be quick to judge a protest as a "lost cause" or as "end result, no gain". Big things come from small ideas. |

There are 87 total Oak Trees in the landscaped grove. The courts have deemed that the trees cant be cut by The University until all the legalities are sorted out (In other words, they are not protecting the trees, because the trees can not be cut ANYWAY until after a ruling. They have been living in them for 18 months for no reason). The Corts have said that they cant squat on UC property for safety reasons. They do it anyway. The Guy "Running Wolf" son was arrested in the '90s for breaking the tops off parking meeters and stealing the money. "Running Wolf" claimed that it was the cities fault for having parking meeters ![]() Further, throwing Shit and Piss on people is not protest. Tarring and fethering is a good excuse to use. To draw perallel between real protestors and these idiots is a joke. To have a real protest there needs to be risk. As there is no immediate risk of the trees being cut until today, them living in trees for 18 months just hurt what they claim to protect. These are not people who stand for something, they are people who stand for protest. If the trees mattered, they would go and protest where loggers are cutting down the last of the Redwoods (something this group has never done), not sitting in a landscape project. If they wanted to protect the trees they would not be goofing around in them starting 18 months before ANY plan to cut them. If the trees mattered they would be on the other end of the campus stopping the cutting of the 20+ oaks that are only being replaced one for one, and are natural, not landscaping. If the trees mattered. That is why. Thanks for playing. BTW, My mother laid on tracks so trains could not take drafties to war. My father was protesting when Reagen sent the National Guard to snipe at Protestors in Berkeley riots. My Father was on Sroul Plaza when the National Guard surrounded them, teargassed them and would not let them disperse. They marched AGAINST Status Quo while the athority attacked them, and the courts supported them. These ****ing idiots are "marching" against no opposition, have been told to stop harming the trees (in the case that the court ruled the other way, they did not want to have to cut down damaged trees). There is no repression. There is no protest unless there is something to protest. They have used every excuse in the book to try and block a VERY good plan enviormentally (We are talking about CAL, not some midwestern U) with a EIR (impact report) that points out that Cal far and away exceeds the already liberal E law in the state. If you dont get the difference between activism and what these people are doing, that is sad. Last edited by ThePhantomOak; 06-19-2008 at 04:13 PM. |

Flux, if you think they have a good cause, put your money where your mouth is.
>>>> "UC has stepped up their attacks on the Oaks Treesitters and their allies. At least 3 people have been arrested already, and UCPD has threatened all those outside with arrest for aiding and abetting. As more sitters and supporters are arrested, we will need money to pay for bails, fines, and other court costs. Please, visit: http://www.oaksarrestees.org and click on the "Donate" button to make a contribution through PayPal. We need your help now! Please donate whatever you can - bail bonds and legal expenses are very pricey. http://www.oaksarrestees.org Thank you, Tristan Bunner Oaks Arrestees Defense Committee"<<<<<<< |

Phantom-
They are doing this in a public forum rather than out in the woods because of the publicity. It would not be covered like this if it was out at a logging field. The school is public but a company’s land is private so there lies the difference in why they would choose this location to protest. I think it’s great what your parents did and think more people should follow their lead and participate in similar causes whenever they arise. I am highly educated in activism and even though I find a lot of their cause and their tactics counterproductive, I still don’t think one should try to belittle or discredit their attempt in protesting as they do truly believe in what they are doing. It’s possible that there is more to the story that we don’t know and I am rather enjoying reading about all of it. |

These people are demanding that trees be spared, and not cut down because they really, really liked a Joyce Kilmer poem. This is not about 'free speach' as they're trying to claim, nor is it about standing up for a cause--it's about someone doing something that they don't like, and them doing whatever it takes to stop them from doing it. Hardly comparable in ANY way to the fight for independance, womans suffrage, or the civil rights. If these people were out there demanding something be done in Darfur, I would be on their side. If they cared ANYTHING about civil rights, they would direct their time, energy, and money to Darfur, human trafficking, or the many problems in the world where REAL civil rights violations are taking place, and the exercision of free speach risks meeting with torture or death. What are they doing? Protesting trees being cut down and crying about how their civil rights are violated. THe constitution protects the right to assemble, it doesn't protect shouting obscenities and throwing fecal matter at anyone. ~Camper |

The other grove of Oaks I am talking about is about 1500 yards away, and on Campus. It is closer to downtown also. So, that argument does not work.
