On a serious note, I think that's a valid point to make. However the three items you listed (independance, suffrage, civil rights) were about people being treated as property or objects and denied very basic liberties that every person should be allowed. A worthy cause for any person to stand up for and protest change.

These people are demanding that trees be spared, and not cut down because they really, really liked a Joyce Kilmer poem. This is not about 'free speach' as they're trying to claim, nor is it about standing up for a cause--it's about someone doing something that they don't like, and them doing whatever it takes to stop them from doing it.

Hardly comparable in ANY way to the fight for independance, womans suffrage, or the civil rights. If these people were out there demanding something be done in Darfur, I would be on their side. If they cared ANYTHING about civil rights, they would direct their time, energy, and money to Darfur, human trafficking, or the many problems in the world where REAL civil rights violations are taking place, and the exercision of free speach risks meeting with torture or death.

What are they doing? Protesting trees being cut down and crying about how their civil rights are violated. THe constitution protects the right to assemble, it doesn't protect shouting obscenities and throwing fecal matter at anyone.
