Default probably a dumb question but bear with me

I'm new to the PS3 and was just wondering is there any advantage or disadvantage to saving saved games to the hard drive versus a USB flash drive? Any thoughts? I just want to be fully prepared before diving into the PS3 (games that is; I already have used BDs on it and both DVDs and BDs seem to display a LOT better with the PS3 than with my old Philips BDP9000) TIA.

Saves need to be on the internal HDD for games to access them. If you mean for backup, it doesn't really matter what portable storage you use.

Flash drives are very handy for carrying files from place to place and computer to computer. However, they are relatively volatile storage, so you should never consider them a primary backup for your files. They fail much, much, much more quickly than CDs or hard drives.
