A) YAMAHA 1800 audio calibration
Just sit in your usual sitting posture like when watching movies,
put the microphone on your head (yes, no joke!) to have it in the best position for measuring.
Now sit still for 2 or 3 minutes and let your 1800 do the calibration automatically.
Worked very fine with me.

B) PS3 sound quality
Step 1)
get your neighbors to move in a different city
Step 2)
set your PS3 audio output to "linear PCM"
Step 3)
connect it to your YAMAHA via HDMI
Step 4)
switch your YAMAHA to "straight audio" (no soundfield)
Step 5)
fasten your toupee...
Step 6)
enjoy!!!

I did exactly the same .. well, almost exactly ... with my 1700 and it's an amazing soundscape, wow!!!

I have the 3800, if the 1800 is similar in sound you should really like it.

One thing to do is really read the manual - I didn't find how to switch my amp to 4 ohms until I'd been using it nearly a month! Also, look at the options for forcing a 5.1 track into a 7.1 system - my girlfriend and I really like the effect. Much less of a ping-pong between rear speakers in our room as the rear left and right speakers can't be placed in an optimal position.

For optimal sound calibration, start with the auto setup, placing the microphone at ear level in the primary listening spot. This is best accomplished by setting it on the top of the couch/chair back, where your head would be, or preferably, by mounting it securely to a tripod as designed. You want to make sure any and all background noise is gone, otherwise it will not optimally set. Holding the microphone on your head is not a good idea, because it definitely will introduce noise into the test.

Once the Yamaha test has completed, it is recommended that you use that as your baseline setting and go back in adjusting the settings manually with a setup disc and SPL meter. There is a sticky in one of the audio threads detailing how to do this. It is a simple process and definitely worth the effort.

Auto Calibration never works right.. You are better off doing it yourself.
