Default wired vs wireless internet connection???

I have a 40 gb ps3 and is connected using a wireless router. I also have comcast cable high speed internet. My question is when I am downloading both firmware updates or demos it takes like a half hour. If I hooked it up using a wire instead would it be faster???

I only use wireless, but I'm pretty sure that wired is faster.

Most likely not, unless you have a SCREAMING FAST internet connection. The wireless is (most likely) running at 54 Mbps and the wired is running at Gb speed. for almost everyone on the face of the planet, their internet connection is nowhere near as fast as the 54 Mbps (much less 1 Gbps). So in either case, your bottleneck is going to be your internet connection.

UNLESS you are running on wireless now and have a shoddy connection. I've seen that kill download speeds.

at least with wired, you don't have to deal with bad reception...I've been kicked out of many games while with connection light lit on my modem.... still have nightmares about wireless on ps3....

It's for that reason I have my PS3 hooked up with a cable. The greater stability is far more important to me than the speed especially with all the wireless doodads I have in my house that sometimes don't play nice together.

It really depends on the Network Card as well as the Router you are using.

Generally though the big difference you'll see is dropping connection while using wireless. Other than that its practically the same.

Also wireless is a half-duplex connection (walkie-talkie) and wired is a full-duplex connection (telephone conversation).

I'd take wired any day over wireless, if available.

Your only going to be able to download from the internet so fast, well under 54mps for now, its how you have it split up in your home you can modify. say with in home network transfers. The PS3 does support gigabit ethernet. Its how I have mine setup and local files are fast, internet files still so-so. I'd check your wireless signal. perhaps relocate the router to another area of the house.

Must be reception or something. I use wireless and updates don't take a half hour. Demos would depend on size. I have comcast too. Do even just the fw updates that dont have major features take that long?

typical wired connections are 100 mbps last time I checked that was faster than 54 mbps. Even if you were not able to take advantage of that 54mbps because of your service you're still downloading slower than a typical wired connection. I would suggest checking the Firmware of you router to make sure its updated.

Initially, the PS3 I'm using on a wired connection seemed at leasttwice as fast (downloading firmware updates) as the one I'm using on wireless (even though signal strength is very good on the wireless). But, at some point they seemed to get closer in speed and I'm not sure if it's because the wireless got faster or the wired got slower. I also haven't timed it recently to see how it is but I'm pretty sure my wired one is still a little faster. I'll usually start the firmware update process on the wireless one first, then go to the wired one and start the process but the wired always finishes first. Neither of them are very fast in that regard (seem much slower than my PCs) but it doesn't take mine 30 minutes to download the firmware updates. A friend of mine has mentioned, a couple of times, that his is extremely slow when downloading the updates and he's using wired. So, I'm not sure what the deal is with that. I wonder if the network speed (bandwidth) tests will work with the PS3.

Thats exactly how my setup is, and is is slow compared to work. My PS3 is wired. I do think your slow speeds are more likely due to demand/load on Sony's side for the updates.

My son just went from wireless to a direct wire to the router.
He says everything is MUCH faster. Also, it has eliminated dropouts.
We have FIoS internet thru Verizon.

I used wired and wireless on my computer to check my speed at speedtest.net

came out to the same speed +-5%

Time of day, how much the information is bounced, and ping matters more. ie, you speed might be uberfast, but a download from Japan/europe will take forever because it has to pass through a shitload of nodes before you get it.

I like to speed test to the middle of the country... that way I know what my real speed will be like.
