Default What's happening to my discs?

Hi guys maybe some of you can shed some light on this. A lot of my blu ray discs seem to have this bronzing type thing going on at the inner hub. Seems to be some sort of chemical thing happening. It mainly affects Warner, Paramount and Universal discs. These always seem to have a messy finish on the hub as opposed to the smooth finish of the likes of Sony discs. When I rub with a white cloth it leaves a residue on the cloth, see pics. Discs are all stored at average room temperature. Is this the beginning of disc rot?

it's the glue used to seal the layers

Is this normal or will it get worse?

Another member had the same issue a few months back. I don't think it causes any playback issues but make sure if you do wipe it off, get all of it off!

If the glue fails the layers will separate but it would need extreme conditions for that to happen (or faulty glue). For what we've seen so far the excess is just that, excess.

The bronze coloured bond between the layers. That's what I've always assumed it to be.

That's strange. I've never seen that on any of my discs.

I have a few BDs with the excess but it's never made it's way out.

Interesting thread. May need to check a few discs for this but so far I haven't noticed any that look like the OP's pics.

If they play properly I don't give a hoot what the bottom of the disc looks like.

The BDs will eventually fail, it is only a matter of time. The layers were improperly bonded during manufacturing. They work out of the factory but heat and humidity will greatly accelerate the process toward their eventual death.

That's why you should keep your discs in low humidity and at room temperature.

Yeah, I'd think that the disc pictured will eventually fail. PDO UK had a major bronzing issue in the early 90s where discs would fail over time. I had ONE disc affected, a PDO UK pressing of Dio's "Diamonds: The Best of Dio". Playing back, it sounded like a worn out vinyl complete with crackles and pops.

I worked for a company that actually produced the discs a while back. I was told by the QC department that all discs, cd, dvd, and blu ray shrink over time and will eventually be unplayable. Granted, this takes quite a long time and is still much longer life than vhs. I never saw any that had glue issues like that though. Looks like QC at whatever plant that came from is not doing their job.

If it's smudging the inner ring like it seems it is for the initial user, by leaving residue on cloth, it could also fling around or smudge the inside of the Blu-ray player, specifically the rubber rings/clamps that grip the disc, or even the laser lens, which in turn might affect playback stability. So yes, I would definitely be worried if there was some sticky or oily substance on my discs. I wouldn't even put it in my player.

Yes, no matter how well you take care of your discs you should still eventually back them up if you want them to last your lifetime. Once hard drives get a little bit bigger on average I'll be backing up my whole collection.
