Default Kung Fu Panda 2 Review Thread (Spoilers)

Quote:
Po's saga continues in this sequel that finds the newly anointed Dragon Warrior (voice of Jack Black) teaming with The Furious Five to safeguard the Valley of Peace. But when a new adversary launches a treacherous bid to seize control of China and obliterate the martial arts, Po must look back to his enigmatic origins in order to unleash his true potential, and defeat this powerful opponent. Dustin Hoffman, Gary Oldman, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Michelle Yeoh provide addition voices for this sequel directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson from a screenplay by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.

Date has been set for the Sequel

Quote:
DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. today announced that Pandamonium will be back in 2011 when the sequel to its worldwide hit, Kung Fu Panda, is expected to hit theaters on June 3, 2011. The Company also anticipates releasing the film into IMAX® theatres worldwide. Kung Fu Panda 2, like all DreamWorks Animation feature films starting in 2009, will be produced in stereoscopic 3D technology.

During its theatrical run, Kung Fu Panda has reached over $626 million in worldwide box office to date, making it one of the most successful films of 2008 and DreamWorks Animation's most successful original film ever. The sequel will follow Po, the world's biggest kung fu fan, as he continues his journey as the chosen one who fulfills an ancient prophesy while mastering the art of kung fu.

The sequel to Kung Fu Panda will once again star Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and other original cast members and will be directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, head of story on Kung Fu Panda. It will be produced by Melissa Cobb. Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, who wrote and co-produced the original film, will also be returning.

DreamWorks Animation's CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg, said, "We are thrilled to reunite the creative team that made 'Kung Fu Panda' such a global success. Because of their imaginative work, Po's path to heroism proved popular with moviegoers of all ages around the world."

Bill Damaschke, Co-President of Production and President of Live Theatrical, added, "The story of 'Kung Fu Panda' provided a great introduction to these characters and afforded wonderful opportunities to further expand on the world we created in ancient China. Quite simply, there's more story to tell."

Kung Fu Panda, which has exceeded $215 million in domestic box office and over $411 million in international territories to date, will be released on two-disc DVD and Blu-ray on November 9, 2008 alongside a brand new companion story, Secrets of the Furious Five.

Wasn't there something about a sequel being released direct-to-DVD w/ the Blu-Ray version?

Exclamation Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom.

Hey,

Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom.

Plot: Po’s search for other pandas and his run-in with a group of bandits.
Release Date:June 3, 2011.

Quote:
The always-awesome Gary Oldman has joined the voice cast for Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom. According to Heat Vision, the 3D sequel to 2008’s surprisingly great Kung Fu Panda will center onPo’s search for other pandas and his run-in with a group of bandits.Oldman will be voicing a character named Peacock who “helps Po find the bandits but is more than he seems.” Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, and Dustin Hoffman are all set to reprise their roles from the first movie. Kaboom of Doom is currently in production and is slated to hit theaters on June 3, 2011.

Oldman recently ate the scenery as the villain in this year’s Book of Eli and can next be seen reprising his role as Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II next July. He’s also set to co-star in Catherine Hardwicke’s Girl with the Red Riding Hood and the indie gangster flick Criminal Empire for Dummys.
Enjoy.

I loved the first movie and will go to the second. As long as it doesn't try to hard to be funny it should be a good movie. If they can get some of the other actors back to do the voices that would be great, otherwise I hope they get rid of the characters.

Other recent rumors have it that DW gave the script to Charlie "Whatever happened to...?" Kaufman (of Eternal Sunshine fanboy fame) for a redraft.

Nobody.
Knows.
WHY.

(Unless somebody at DW decided their last hope at road-to-the-Oscars "Adult appeal" was to steal some of Mr. Fox's thunder, and get a Sundance-indie filmmaker to spoil the fun.)

I usually groan at the idea of sequels... but the first one exceeded my expectations and that list of voice-actors is great. I don't think I ever realized that Dustin Hoffman was the voice of Shifu in the first one, either! He's like my favorite actor!

Update:

Jean Claude Van Damme, Michelle Yeoh, and Victor Garber joins the cast

Quote:
DreamWorks Animation has announced that Jean Claude Van Damme (JCVD), Michelle Yeoh (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), and Victor Garber (Alias) are joining the voice cast of Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom. Last week we reported that Gary Oldman has also joined the cast. Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, and Dustin Hoffman are set to reprise their roles from the original film. Oldman is playing Lord Shen, a villainous peacock (that should be a band name but remove the “pea”) while Yeoh is playing a mystical goat named The Soothsayer. Van Damme will play Master Croc and Garber will play Master Thundering Rhino.

Oldman voices the character of Lord Shen (a peacock), the film’s formidable new villain while Yeoh brings to life the mystical character of The Soothsayer (a goat). Van Damme and Garber round out the cast as Master Croc and Master Thundering Rhino, respectively. The story will center on Po (Black) trying to find other pandas and his adventures along the way.
