I have a 65' Mitsubishi rear projection.I bought it about 6 years ago. I have had not one issue with it. The picture still looks great! I joined the BLU RAY generation even though I have no HDMI connection on my TV. Watched BLU RAY MI3 last night and the picture was just great. Afterwards,I tried the regular DVD of the same movie. I could see a minor/moderate difference. Picture looked "flatter" but crystal clear. I have heard that regular DVD's DO NOT improve through component jacks on BLU RAY but it looked pretty good to me. So,what are the facts on component cables upconverting regular DVD's? Last night,I put the FF:Rise of the Surfer on both my BLU RAY & my regular SAMSUNG DVD player. The picture looked much better on the BLU RAY. Colors were deeper and richer.

Upconversion only works through HDMI. I presume your TV accepts hi-def through component.
I too, have longed for upconversion through component, but someone here once stated there is some kind of law preventing it. If not, a technical issue. Perhaps even lack of desire. <shrug> |

This rule for DVD players is governed by the DVD CCA license terms, which requires that when protected content is output on a digital interface with a resolution >480p, then the DVD player may only do this on an approved digital interface. DVI HDCP and HDMI HDCP are among these approved interfaces. That's why component is locked down to 480p, and the upscaled video (again, only for protected content like movies) can only be viewed on HDMI.
There were a few players that could upscale over component, like the Oppo 970, and a few others but I believe it required some kind of hack, and even then it was debated how much the picture was improved. I also have a professionally calibrated 65" Sony XBR2 in the basement that I will be adding a Blu-ray player to this fall. The display still looks good and I also want to see how a Blu-ray image looks on the unit. Has to be better than std. def. |

However, there is a way around it. If you rip a backup copy of your DVD, it strips the protection from the file and will allow upconversion via component. At least it works on my Sony BDP-S300. However, it may not work for all players. If I recall someone with a Panny BD-30 said it was incapable of upconverting even a ripped DVD. Do a forum search. |

Do the standard DVD's that I have on my BLU RAY have copy protection that would prevent upconverting through component jacks? I thought that the software to protect copying on BLU RAY movies has not yet been started by the studios, anyway? All I can tell you is I see a definite improvement on standard DVD's when run on my Magnavox BLU RAY. Last edited by JimMags; 06-27-2008 at 04:07 PM. |

Blu-Ray media will be upconverted via component, for now. At some point in the future they will put a stop to this. |

That is correct. I was thinking about upconversion of std def. material, not BLu-ray. I remember when it was announced that the studios would let the Blu-ray media upconvert for now but couldrescind that feature in the future. Does anyone know how this would happen? Would it be only on newly purchased media or could/would it be made retroactive via firmware? I hope when this happens it's clearly identified on the box cover. |

Bluray media is not up converted, but passed in its native resolution. Upconversion is iffy at best, i have tried three such players against my trusty Sim Audio dvd player and none came close to the Moon.
