Box sets are my preferred option, once you reach 500+ movies, or in my case 1000+, storage becomes an issue. Box sets offer the same movies in a condensed packaging.

If I want the whole or majority of a series (ex: Alien, Indiana Jones) then I'll go for the box set. But if I only want one or two movies from a series (ex: Die Hard, Jurassic Park) I'll pick them up individually.
Space concerns and packaging can sometimes be a major factor. |

I prefer each film get its own plastic case. I dislike cardboard packaging, like the Bond 50 set or Alien Anthology. Those are nice, pretty sets but it makes getting the discs out a hassle, and in the case of Bond 50 is harder to store/display.
That said I just prefer individual cases, I'm not OCD about it. |

Put me down for individual cases. Box sets usually come in crappy packaging, and they look inconsistent on my shelf due to their various size, uneven edges/tops/bottoms, crushed/bent corners, etc. The only box set I really like a lot is The Lord Of The Rings extended edition trilogy. That's it. Even the Star Wars box set is ugly.

i generally prefer box sets unless i absolutely don't want any of the sequels (i.e. "First Blood," but no "Rambo" movies) or if i only want a couple movies in the series (i.e. "Die Hard" and "Die Hard With a Vengeance")... often times certain movies in a set aren't even available individually. and sometimes i'll buy full sets even if i DON'T particularly want all the movies (i.e. the complete "Star Wars" saga rather than the OT, but that was specifically for features)...
i won't even bother buying individual seasons of TV shows anymore. i much prefer to wait for the inevitable "complete series" set. |
