How big is a 7.1 96kHz/24 track (in GB) per hour, PCM vs. DD TrueHD?

And how big is a movie in 2.40:1 aspect in AVC with 30 mbit/s per hour?

Benes:
Just a quick note...since no actual rates for this title are listed.
Space Cowboys main feature is VC-1 with the extras in 480i/p
MPEG2 (another Warner conversion).

Space Cowboys is MPEG-2. I'd say about 20Mb/s for action scenes?

Holy Crap!
I never bothered to look at the PS3 display for this title (and of course the Samsung doesn't tell you at all).
I'd assumed since it came out after Warner's switchover that they'd simply translated their HD DVD version like the rest.

Anyway I've added the info for BHD, KOH, and X-Men. The Fox titles have 2 interesting things about them. First they list the video bitrate on the back cover. I've added a new column for it. You can compare this to what I calculated myself. Again my method was simply to subtract the audio bitrates from the total bitrates. Feel free to draw your own conclusions on how accurate these all are now.

The other interesting thing about the Fox titles is that they use DTS-HD MA audio. I haven't been able to find any info on what exact bitrate it uses. According to their website it can be 2046-5760 Kbps for bluray. So I decided to use a number of 4000 Kbps. For all the other audio tracks I've been using what is reported by PowerDVD. Which has been accurate as far as I can tell. (640 or 440 for the main tracks, 192 for the commentaries, 1500 or 3000 for DTS, 4600 for PCM) But for the DTS MA track it reports a different number every time I seek to a different spot in the movie.

Also look for 14 other titles to be added soon...
If I am not mistaken, Dts MA lossless is a VBR(variable bit rate) encoder/decoder scheme. So it makes sense that you get different bit rates at different parts of the movie because the demand for bits is either high or low based on the program material.

Yes, but not comparable between different encoding technologies.

Comparing an MPEG-2 compressed image at X Mbps to the same AVC/H.264 compressed version at the same Mbps will show the newer more advanced "AVC/H.264" to be of much better quality. Simply because the AVC/H.264 encoding uses much better compression algorithms.

To see this easily in the real world, encode a complex video with MPEG-2 at a low 0.5Mbps, encode the same with AVC at 0.5Mbps. The AVC version will be of a far superior quality with less artefacts when played back.

Benes, any chance we will get the bitrates for the Pirates movies? These are some of the best Blu-ray discs released thus far, and based on a quick look at my meter on my Pioneer Elite HD1, the bitrates actually don't seem like they are that high on average.

Could be interesting...

That's what I thought. I find that very interesting considering it has what is perhaps the best PQ of any Blu-ray title released to date.

For those who are interested:
With more & more Dolby TrueHD soundtracks we can find out the resolution of the soundtracks using the bitrate meter on the PS3.

http://www.dolby.com/assets/pdf//tec...0925_Final.pdf

16-bit soundtracks (5.1) will usually average 1.4 Mbps with 3 Mbps peaks (Letters From Iwo Jima).
24-bit soundtracks (5.1) will usually average 3.4 Mbps with 5 Mbps peaks (Legends of Jazz).

Benes, can you update the charts to reflect these titles?

OK, finally (been busy)...

Letters From Iwo Jima
: Dolby Digital Japanese 640kbps, Dolby TrueHD 1.4Mbps avg (16-bit). The VC-1 video averages somewhere in the high teens.
Legends of Jazz: Dolby TrueHD 3.4 Mbps avg (24 bit), Dolby Digital 5.1 448kbps, PCM 2.0 stereo 2.3Mbps (24 bit), video bitrate stays above 30Mbps!

To see this easily in the real world, encode a complex video with MPEG-2 at a low 0.5Mbps, encode the same with AVC at 0.5Mbps. The AVC version will be of a far superior quality with less artefacts when played back.
You are right as far as it comes to medium and high compression settings. MPEG-2 may be old and less advanced but you get a crisper picture at low compression settings.
