I have heard one for a few minutes at Future Shop and thought it was great. I have heard from an audiophile they make some of the best subwoofers in the business.
I would like to hear from people who own a Velodyne subwoofer what do you think. Last edited by Canada; 07-02-2008 at 07:00 AM. |

They make a good product. I don't know about "the best in the buisness", but you will probably not be disappointed with their performance. However, their top-of-the-line model, I think its the DD18, is regarded as one of the best subwoofers period. You'll pay over $3k for one of those though.

I wouldn't buy a Velodyne sub below the DPS line though. What sort of budget are you working with? I would recommend determining your budget and then find the best you can at that level. Companies I'd check out include Velodyne, Paradigm, Hsu Research, Def Tech, NHT, Outlaw Audio, or Thiel. The key is to audition several subs in order to determine what truly appeals to you. Just remember that subs are better felt than heard. They shouldn't be boomy or muddy sounding, there shouldn't be any audible port noise, and you shouldn't be able to audibly locate the sub with your eyes closed. |

I have two Velodyne VRP-1000 subs and I LOVE them! I actually listen to music through them more than watching films. I am a musician/ drummer and I am very picky about my drum sound from recorded music and how it is EQed in a sound system. I have a very unique sweet spot in my living room of my apartment. It is the front right corner of my sitting/ listening position and there is an extra 'void' about 2' deep and 2' wide behind the subs. This acts as an additional cavity/ speaker cabinet and rocks my world! I have one VRP stacked right on top of the other (which Velodyne reps actually said was thee way to do it!). I live on a 4-lane busy-ass street in Anaheim, California and I get away with murder with my volume due to the loud street noise. The VRP 1000's perform very well! Skins

They make smaller ones suitable for "small" setups, just as they make big-beefy ones..... but as far as quality goes, they're all really well made, responsive, "fast" subs.... From the ones I've seen (I looked at them, but went another direction)

I have a Velodyne DD-12 in a fairly small room (11 ft X 11 ft). I calibrated it using the built-in Velodyne software and then I ran an Audyessy calibration for my entire system. This combination of calibration makes the sub perform very accurately when playing movies or music. Cloverfield is downright scary.

Velodyne make great subs. My brother had one and it's great!
But some companies make subs that have a better quality/price ratio... Check some ratings on this other thread: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...27&postcount=5 or on AVS http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=768150. I just bought a SVS 20-39PC-Plus and I love it (I just received it yesterday and I tried it a bit on my old setup and it beats the crap out of my Klipsch KSW-12...) And it was like 200$ more than the Klipsch! And anyway try it for yourself and if it doesn't work for you bring it back within a month! |

The DD1812 Signature Edition is their top of the line. It has a 12" and 18" driver in it and operates on similar principles as the rest of the excellent, if not over-priced, DD line. I think the list on the DD-18 is over $5,000, so the DD1812 is definitely more than that. The UK list price on the DD1812 was £10,995 ![]() It's funny how small the 12" driver looks isn't it? ![]() Pictures are from the AV Talk website's testing section. None of the Velodyne's equalled the Paradigm Servo Signature sub for THD though. |
