Heh. I'll still call big franchises 'franchises' because that's what they are: moneymaking vehicles that expand on the original premise. No studio makes films out of the goodness of their cold, black hearts, not even the mighty Marvel (I've recently become aware of how ruthless and spiteful they can be when they don't get their own way).

That term to me doesn't apply to the era the film was made in, but rather the presentation of the story or certain elements therein. A great example of cheesy to me is Dungeons & Dragons. That movie was cheesy in the worst way possible. I guess the term is overused, and not often in the right situations though. Cheesy is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree with the article that "reboot" is tossed around way too much. Or else there are too many reboots out there. In any case, I get sick of hearing it.
Do people even say "threequel" anymore? I only ever remember hearing about that for like one year (I think it was 07 or so, back when POTC3 and other ones came out all at once). Edgy and gritty don't bother me, I love edgy and gritty work. I suppose the author has a point where those terms are applied to movies that don't truly deserve it, but I don't recall ever seeing "edgy" or "gritty" applied to the titles he's mentioned. ![]() Franchises are everywhere, so I agree with Geoff D on that one. As far as cheese goes, I think it's mentioned way too often as a source of criticism. I personally like cheese on occasion, and if it's made that way on purpose, it puzzles me when people complain about it. Just like people complaining about movies being edgy and gritty. ![]() |

I don't really see an issue with using any of these words, for me the movie terms that need retiring are anything hyperbolic. People these days can't seem to say "I liked/disliked the movie" it has to be "this is unquestionably the greatest film of all time/unarguably the worst film ever made....". Until the next one you watch, and I'm glad you stress them as facts because that is totally what your opinion is.

I would like to see "pretentious" retired, as it is almost always used incorrectly and applied to films that are anything but. |

One word that really annoys me is "entertaining", not because of the word itself - I use it all the time - but because it's so often misused that it undermines the word all together. If you enjoyed a film, and openly admitted it still wasn't particularly good then using the word "entertaining" is fine to me but if it was a bad movie, and you feel uncomfortable in the fact that you enjoyed watching that bad movie, the word "entertaining" shouldn't be used as a way of being ignorant to the films faults.

I could really do without the term overrated...It seems like a term that's thrown around a lot now by people who don't like a film and just want to stir up the people who do. I'm cool with people who don't like a film, but saying it's overrated doesn't really make sense to me, if that many people really do love it, there's a reason. It's fine to be in the minority that doesn't, but don't stir people up by calling things overrated, it just seems cheap without giving real criticism for the film.

Way, way too many people seem to (practically) only take pleasure in trying to seem "outside the box" by calling out anything/anyone that is popular. It gets tiring very quickly. |

What an incredibly stupid article. They're claiming that words like "threequel" escaped into everyday usage, when that is seriously the first time I've ever encountered the phrase both on the internet and in every day life. And 'edgy' or 'gritty,' and especially 'franchise' are all relevant movie terms surely? Hate to break it to the writer but many existing films are not "a work of art" and even more of them are surely *gasp* "a money-making device."
