I guess I'm just becoming an old fuddy-duddy. To each his own and I'm not going to judge anyone on their taste in entertainment. For me these newer "comedies" that rely heavily on pervasive language and relentless potty humor to get a laugh are just...I don't know...old and boring. Sure, I laughed myself to tears the first time I saw "Porky's", but I was like 17. I watched it recently for old times sake and just shook my head. Don't get me wrong, I can still appreciate the humor in such things. I'm not a total prude. I just wish there was more substance.
No one seems to really write a good comedy anymore. "When Harry Met Sally", "Defending Your Life" and "Trains, Planes & Automobiles" are great examples. Extremely well written, intelligent and funny. They didn't rely on too many disgusting site gags, a non-stop barrage of F-bombs or insult my intelligence. I'd really like to see more comedies like that. Any recent film suggestions? What am I missing out there? |
