I guess I'm just becoming an old fuddy-duddy. To each his own and I'm not going to judge anyone on their taste in entertainment. For me these newer "comedies" that rely heavily on pervasive language and relentless potty humor to get a laugh are just...I don't know...old and boring. Sure, I laughed myself to tears the first time I saw "Porky's", but I was like 17. I watched it recently for old times sake and just shook my head. Don't get me wrong, I can still appreciate the humor in such things. I'm not a total prude. I just wish there was more substance.

No one seems to really write a good comedy anymore. "When Harry Met Sally", "Defending Your Life" and "Trains, Planes & Automobiles" are great examples. Extremely well written, intelligent and funny. They didn't rely on too many disgusting site gags, a non-stop barrage of F-bombs or insult my intelligence. I'd really like to see more comedies like that. Any recent film suggestions? What am I missing out there?

I love comedies but my top 5 would be:
1. Tommy Boy (Farley was amazing, taken way too soon)
2. 40 Year Old Virgin
3. Superbad
4. Billy Madison
5. Tropic Thunder (it's new so I don't know how long it will stand up to multiple watches but I laugh so hard for so long that my face ached coming out of the movie)

Where's the love for Groundhog's Day?

[Also like things like Superbad (but very few of them), and loved There's Something About Mary. And scanning though the previous posts, yes, I laughed during parts of Borat! Most of the rest mentioned really weren't all that funny to me, sorry. Offhand, can't think of many others, though there's certainly been a few... pretty forgetable I guess. Oh, liked what I saw of Wedding Crashers.]

But I do agree with original poster that most of the "comedy" out there is dreadful...

The Exorcist Prequel had me ON THE FLOOR!!!

I don't know what the heck it was and people were kinda gringing around me, but when that kid got ripped apart by Jackels....I dunno...comedy central right there.

That movie was full of inappropriately funny little gems!!!

oOo. I'm a master debater, so this should be fun.

First off, what are you laughing at in Total Recall? I don't recall that movie being funny (at least not intentionally)

Generally for me, it's not even so much the lines in a movie that are funny. I don't often find myself laughing at the actual jokes per se, more in the way a character acts or delivers their lines.

Eugene Levy is a great example. It's rarely what he's saying that's funny, but all how he says it and his facial expressions. Steve Carell is also so great at being funny just when acting normal.

I personally find Will Ferrel funny most of the time too. Only when he's a little more toned down though.

There haven't been a ton of great comedies lately. I really loved Knocked Up though. Liked Be Kind Rewind as well (not the serious parts). 40 yr old virgin was also a lot of fun and definitely made me laugh.

I hated things like Borat, Jackass (that's supposed to be funny right?), and really any movie where people are just too over the top in trying to be funnier. Haven't big a big fan of Sandler films lately either, but I did really like Rob Schneiders part in 'Chuck and Larry'

Oh and if you want a good laugh - check out Jackie Chan's Gorgeous. Don't think I've laughed that much in a long time.

I agree with you completely. Heck, pretty much anything from John Hughes form the early/mid 80's - Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink.

I don't have any recent suggestions otherwise.

I am surprised no one has offered up the Naked Gun movies. I know they are over the top type of comedies, but they are real funny.

Here are some other favs of mine:
1. Austin Powers - I know it has been played out by now, but when you first saw it - admit you laughed.
2. Napoleon Dynamite - you have to watch this movie at least three to four times to soak it all in
3. Blazing Saddles
4. The Jerk
5. The Vacation Movies
6. Animal House
7. Raising Arizona
8. Little Miss Sunshine
etc.

This topic pops up all the time, but I am 100% right when I say that the funniest American movie ever was My Cousin Vinnie.

But if you like movies where the good story is the main feature, and the comedy is incidental (as described by the OP) then The Boys and Girl from County Clare (Irish film) is fantastic.

What has happened to comedy?

Don't get me wrong, I laugh at movies like Wedding Crashers, The Hangover, and Trainwreck. But I'm talking about times I laughed the hardest, and scenes that still make me laugh today. I'm talking about movies like Caddyshack, Airplane, Mel Brooks movies, and Monty Python. The Carol Burnett Show, Mash, Taxi, and Dean Martin Roasts.

The style and timing were just so different. Less over-the-top but somehow funnier to me. Is this style of humor just unpopular now? Is it a lost talent? Is it too subtle? Do people just want more overt goofiness? Could anyone working now even make a movie like Airplane?

Many modern comedies now just don't seem as funny on subsequent rewatchings, but some of the ones listed above I still find hilarious.
