Default Wall Mount or TV Stand?

I've noticed the majority of the people on this site opt to keep their lcd or plasma's on a tv stand. I was just wondering if there was any reason or logic to it or if it was just personal preference. I just got my LCD not too long ago and i knew getting it i would eventually want to wall mount it. I was just wondering, however if that would be a mistake, or if it would cause my tv to malfunction for any reason. Any input appreciated...
