Receiver and Speaker Quality

Quick question about getting the best sound...Do certain brands or models of receivers affect the sound quality better than other similar receivers based on the quality of speaker?

For insance: I have Infinite speakers in a 7.1 setup, and I was told that a Yamaha receiver would do a better job than a Pioneer, mostly because my speakers are higher quality and I would be able to notice a difference with the Yamaha that i wouldn't hear with the Pioneer.

Thoughts?
