Do me a favor and bring up internet explorer and type in "192.168.100.1" and let me know what your signal levels are. I'll help you out.
![]() Part 1 1. Your "Power Level" is the most important thing in keeping your modem "locked". This number should be below 50, but only needs to be below 58 or so to work. The lower the better. This is commonly called the return signal. 2. Next check your "Received Signal Strength". This number should be between -10 and +10, with 0 being the best. (Same goes for your cable boxes and I can tell you how to check your signal there too!) 3. Now check your BER or Bit Error Rate. This shows your how much error is in your internet connection and can determine your speed. This should be at 0%. _____________________ Part 2 (Windows) 1. Click "Start" 2. Click "Run" and type "cmd"(If you have Vista you'll have to click Accessories and then click command prompt.) 3. Now that the command prompt is up we'll check another VERY important part. Type "ping -t www.google.com" Your computer will now start to ping Google over and over until you hit "CONTROL + C" buttons at the same time. When pinging make sure to let it run for a couple minutes. 4. Now that you've done a ping test check to see how many packets were sent, and how many were received/lost. You need to have 0% packet loss. <---- If there are ANY packets lost, then there is your problem. This can be 1 of 2 things. Its either the modem itself which is common 90% of the time, OR then its losing packets straight from the tap and a line tech will have to come out because its usually a larger problem, could take days to fix. 5. If there is 0% packet loss then a line tech will have to come out and adjust your speed at the node, pretty easy. Trust me....I Know what I'm talking about. ;-) Pic of the last speed test I did a couple months ago. ![]() Cheers Last edited by Footloose301; 08-26-2008 at 11:48 PM. |
