Halloweentown -

Has been one of my favorite Disney Channel movies since it premiered way back in 1998. The movie just perfectly captures the Halloween feeling perfectly. Now, I noticed on this viewing that it does move a little slow in places, but that doesn't take away from how interesting the story is and just how perfect the cast is.

10/1 - Lake Placid (1998) -

"Four and a half skulls? What are you smoking?" Yes folks, I love Lake Placid. It was one of the first gory films I ever saw during my childhood and I think it still holds up today. I haven't seen it in years but I decided to buy the Scream Factory BD and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It's a great monster movie with a great cast and great characters. It's funny as hell too, man I forgot how funny it was. I also never realized until well after Bridget Fonda retired just how great she was, as she turned in another stellar performance here. I just love this flick, it's a fun film.

10/1 - *Killer Mermaid (2014) -

It came from Netflix! Golly, what a terrible movie. I figured going in it would be a shit show but I thought "I've never seen a horror film about a mermaid, it'll be a new experience. And SyFy original movie-style films can be fun." Unfortunately it wasn't a SyFy creation and it took itself way too seriously. Just a waste of my time, bleh.

* - 1st Time Viewing

10/1 - *Trick 'r Treat (2007)
[Show spoiler]

I really liked the cast and acting throughout this movie, and the cinematography and music were top-notch as well. I liked that it was basically an anthology, but that each of the stories were interconnected. I had a lot of fun with it. It's got plenty of scary scenes, some gross-out stuff, and a lot of funny parts too.

10/1 - *I, Madman (1989)
[Show spoiler]

Cool villain, nice lead actress, some interesting ideas. The occasional goofy stop-motion stuff is kind of weird. A little slow at times, a little cliche. Overall, it was a decently fun movie.

10/1 - *Lost After Dark (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Stereotypical characters, cliche scenario, stiff acting, unconvincing effects and editing, lack of humor... It was gimmicky and failed as an homage, with so much missing the mark. There were only a couple of brief scenes that were pretty fun.

10/1 - *The Editor (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Great job creating the vibe of a traditional giallo, very good cinematography and music. The acting really got on my nerves though, and the whole thing started to feel too much like a gimmick at times. The plot was really confusing for me, but some of the scenes in this movie were truly great, including some that had me literally rolling on the floor laughing. I kind of thought it didn't go all in enough on the parody aspect.

10/1 - *It Follows (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Great atmosphere, great concept, great execution, great music, great acting! I liked the characters and they actually displayed normal levels of human intelligence and intuition in most of the movie.

10/1 - Fright Night (1985)
[Show spoiler]

I really like the feel of this movie, it's kind of light-hearted, but suspenseful as well. Some of the characters are very odd in a charming sort of way. There is a lot of funny stuff in this, and the gore & special effects in the final act are really cool. Just great characters, atmosphere, writing, and everything all around. A lot of fun.

10/1 - *Castle Freak (1995)
[Show spoiler]

Great plot, great atmosphere & setting, excellent acting, convincing effects work, moody lighting, interesting characters. Totally engrossing, enhanced by the gruesomeness of it all. Just a really wonderful, freaky as hell movie.

10/1 - Swamp Thing (1982)

Not a great movie, but it's a pretty fun kid-friendly 1950's drive-in style B-movie. Kind of slow to get going, but the finale is an absolute blast, complete with ridiculous rubber suit special effects and hammy performances.

Scream 2 (1997)

I picked this up on the day of Wes Craven's passing. I only watched it one other time many years ago, and remember not being all that impressed. Well, I guess times have changed, because I liked it quite a lot on tonight's viewing. Though not as fantastic as the original Scream, it's a fine continuation of that movie's plot and it's definitely the best of the three sequels.

#2
Firestarter (1984)*

This is the first time I ever watched this all the way through. Bits and pieces of severely edited Saturday afternoon TV airings from over the years were etched into my brain, but watching this uncut was practically a revelation. Pretty basic plot that, to me, was somewhat reminiscent of the "It's a Good Life" episode of the original Twilight Zone series. However, the pyrotechnics on display were worth the price I paid for the disc alone.
[Show spoiler] Lots and lots of guys running around on fire was pretty fun too!

despite hearing how bad it was, I still wanted to see it and when it was reduced to a good price, I bit (pardon the pun)...

I figured it had a real man-created monster fish, not a CGI hackjob...

well, the fish was fun to see, the movie was not. This had some of the most obnoxious, horrible characters I've ever seen in a horror film. There's zero empathy for them, they are hideous people... the death scenes of these characters were quite frankly not good enough...

Really enjoying reading what everyone's watching. This is my first year participating so here's what I watched:

*First time viewing

10/1

*Theater of Blood(1973) Somewhat similar to Dr. Phibes, Vincent Price plays a Shakespearian actor come back to life to kill off his critics. Cool death scenes and a right amount of blood.

*Bloodlust(1961) Based on, "The Most Dangerous Game" this b-grade flick features a sadistic hunter hunting a group of teens on a remote island. Though low budget, I actually enjoyed this one.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space(1988) I remember seeing this one when I was really young and being mildly entertained by it. But seeing it now, its a piece of crap.

1. *All Cheerleaders Die (2013) Lucky McKee…89mins

[Show spoiler] I knew nothing about this going in other than that it was clearly about cheerleaders, so I was hoping it was going to have a sort of Mean Girls meets Scream kind of vibe; y’know, a nice little cheesy slasher. Boy, was I mistaken.

I still haven’t decided whether it’s down to editing or just good old-fashioned horrible writing, but the plot of this one made no sense whatsoever. The cheerleaders of the title die pretty early on, only to be brought back to life by a Wiccan ex lesbian lover and some glowy crystals that are supposed to represent something that never gets explained. They’ve also somehow ended up in each others bodies, which might’ve been interesting had they not all essentially been the same character to begin with. So yeah, back from the dead, they naturally need to chow down on some human takeaway once in a while and then…do you know what? There’s not really much point in me trying to explain what happened for the rest of the movie because it made zero sense. Suffice it to say, there’s more lazy writing, some gore effects that even a SyFy original movie would have dismissed as cheap, and a whole lot more of those glowy crystals.

It’s OK for us to love to hate cheerleaders in movies if they get some fun snarky quips to make them remotely entertaining, but that isn’t the case here. I’m not sure whether we’re supposed to hate them or be rooting for them, because they’re so bland that you don’t really care either way. I haven’t seen the new Ryan Murphy show Scream Queens as yet, but it would have to go a long way to find b!tchy teen girls more yawn-worthy than these.

This was the worst movie I’ve seen this year by far. There’s nothing redeemable here, I couldn’t even say it was ‘so bad it’s good’ because there are so many movies that do the same sort of themes so much better. To put it into perspective for you, Jennifer’s Body looks like Citizen Kane next to this mess.

MOST MEMORABLE DEATH:
[Show spoiler] Falling into a bunch of bear traps.

TOTAL RUNTIME: 1 hour 29 mins

10/1

Spellbinder (1988)

[Show spoiler]Thoroughly stupid riff on The Wicker Man that possesses enough quirkiness to always entertain. Tim Daly rescues Kelly Preston from her own personal Chris Brown in the parking lot of his gym, takes her home for some snuggles, and then must contend with a cult that's stalking her (not Scientology). Some notables:

Mrs. Roper's office freakout, wherein she beats herself up...

...and Tim Daly taking a bath (who owns that many candles?).

Did you notice that one of the endangered teens is Robert Reed -- the dad on the Brady Bunch?

I genuinely just thought we were all using the metric from the OP?

The time is here again, I didn't watch one for yesterday yet so it's a double feature tonight . The horror villain I voted for was Lecter, after the amazing TV show, how could I not.

- Very good early 80's slasher with a dark sense of humor. Though the Canadian accents do get to be a bit much.
