It's all about money and 4K or higher scanners are pricey. Other than Sony the major studios mainly have 2K scanning equipment or so I have read. Then there's the fact that most studios, little or big, still render VFX at 2K.

It really is mostly the editing process though. Transferring that amount of data so it can be played back immediately requires a huge infrastructure investment. Don't expect people to just be flicking a switch and be all moving to 4k DI anytime soon even if they have the scanners available.

IIRC Tarantino's using the same UP70 lenses for Hateful 8 that were used to shoot Wyler's Ben Hur.

That's amazing! I know these cameras are treated with the utmost care, but you have to figure after several decades some wear & tear would affect them.

Oh, they still had to refurbish the sh-, er, heck out of them before they were ready for use as the internal elements had frozen stiff over time, they needed new coatings etc. There's a wonderfully techy piece on it here: http://in70mm.com/news/2015/paramount/index.htm

Very neat article! Funny that in the Jurassic thread we talk about "going back" to an older technology. How they mention that even with today's laser sharp imagery, it still can't faithfully replicate that soft feel of those lenses from decades ago.

Did anybody read the front page for the figures on Jurassic World's release numbers?!

Fair enough, but as I'm sure you know Ultron was shot on digital which is why it looks more digital. Like I said, only seen JW the once but for all the talk about film this, film that, I was distinctly unimpressed with the visuals. Not gonna get the BD until it's going for buttons though, not because I'm cheap but because the film's pretty poor IMO. I'll put it on my "Geoff, you really should know better" shelf where the current alumni include Star Trek Into Darkness and San Andreas.

I have a drawer of shame set up for just those kinds of purchases. Jurassic World is on the shelf though. It's super dumb, and the ending is cheesy as hell, but the little kid inside me who saw Jurassic World like 10 times in the theater just can't hate it.

The real guilt will come if I buy Terminator Genisys.

Aw hell naw, I hate when "cinematic universe" is used when it doesn't even make sense. What would the Jurassic Park series be crossing over with to justify it being described as a "cinematic universe"? Would they make spin-offs about parks containing prehistoric animals from other geologic periods, and then they all meet and fight? Mosasaurus vs. Megalodon!
