Default Comcast HD Cable

For anyone who has Comcast's HD DVR service I have a question. I don't think I'm hooking things up right. I have a Panasonic 1080P Plasma from 2007 and when I watching cable via the HD box my tv's status button only show 480i regardless of whether the channel is in HD or not. I have it connected into my TV with an HDMI cable. The manual recommends using component cables to get "true HD," but wouldn't HDMI give the same or better resolution? Thanks for any help, Tim.
