What you have spoiler tagged makes sense. Almost all of those rehashed/references that could have been memorable quotes were used as punchlines to jokes.

It was weird to see a Star Wars film without the 20th Century Fox jingle.

The most memorable lines are the jokes...

Saw it again and I just realized a few things this time around:
[Show spoiler]
1. Snock says Kylo is from the Knights of Ren. Does this mean there are more of them and that Ren is actually their surname while their first name is the name they choose? Does this mean the Knights of Ren are like the Inquisitors to the Empire?

2. There is actually a double meaning when Kylo has his conversation with Han. I just realized when he says, "I have this pain that won't go away and I need to do something I'm not sure I can do without your help to make it go away."

3. Rey must have been at the island Luke is on before because Kylo saw it when he was scanning her mind.

What's sad is RickDee's so butthurt about his precious "unraped" OT that he attacks George Lucas here instead of just liking what he likes, accepting differences in opinions and moving on.

Default Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (USE SPOILER TAGS!)

Saw it on Thursday night in 3D and enjoyed it overall, though it is far from perfect. Many of the character and plot issues have already been discussed here, so I won't go on. I do have to stress that a lot of the humor is funny but dull, in a Marvel-esque way. It also suffers from Jurassic World-itis, where it is too much of a nostalgia trip. But I liked this and didn't really care for JW, so does that make me a hypocrite?

l saw it at my local cinemas on Thursday. Got there an hour early expecting big crowds. There were thirteen people in total in the theatre (and that included myself, my wife, son and four of his friends). It was showing in four of their Atmos theatres at varying times, but considering it is school holiday time there was only a handful of people at each showing.

In all fairness, George Lucas never wanted to direct the prequel trilogy. He initially asked Steven Spielberg to direct but he turned it down...then he went along and asked a few other big directors who also turned it down. They might not have been made at all if he didn't direct them.

People also forget that he only directed Episode 4 in the original trilogy. I wonder if fans actually know the names of the other 2 directors in the original trilogy without looking them up on google.

My Review

Quote:
"Nothing will stand in our way... I will finish what you started."
-Kylo Ren

Star Wars is ****ing everywhere. There are statues of it in front of malls, it's in people's t-shirts, in their words. Everywhere I look, it's there - Disney have probably made their entire budget money back just from sponsors. The fact of the matter is that this saga is really important to a lot of people, it hits close to home. I didn't grow up with it, so I always judged these films for what they are: films. A New Hope was good, Empire was excellent, but Return of the Jedi was merely decent. I've caught bits and pieces of the prequels on TV too, but I've never seen them in their entirety. Star Wars is something that isn't that relevant in my life. Nonetheless, I was stoked for The Force Awakens due to an intriguing and effective marketing campaign and tons of hype. Even though I booked my seats two hours after they went on sale, I was only able to get IMAX tickets for the second day of release. I arrived there just moments before the trailers started playing, and found myself amidst a crowd of beyond enthusiastic and excited fans. As soon as the Lucasfilm logo came up on screen, people started cheering and screaming in what I can only call a wonderful fit of mad fanboyism. Then, there was silence.

Sound effects.

Movie dialogue.

People chewing popcorn.

A great cinematic score.

Was that a sneeze?

Yep, yet no other sound came out of people's mouths, even though I knew they were going bananas on the inside. I know that because I, a person with no attachment to Star Wars whatsoever, was feeling that way too. After the film ended, most remained silent, but they had something else in common besides their incapacity to speak in that moment - they were smiling.

The Force Awakens is a beautiful cinematic spectacle. Modernized for today's audience, yet faithful to every single aspect of the original films, it's far more than just an homage to the classic trilogy - it's a perfect blockbuster. From its non-stop intensity to its surprisingly well-developed and loveable characters, it has it all. It has got fantastic, engaging protagonists in Daisy Ridley's Rey and John Boyega's Finn, both characters that I couldn't get enough of and who have great chemistry with each other, and a relentlessly fascinating villain in Kylo Ren.

Although familiar, The Force Awakens is far from predictable or formulaic. It's a film that holds many surprises throughout, and honestly, I can't even decide which part is my favorite. All of the action sequences are exciting and fresh, but so are the quieter character moments.

J.J. Abrams did here what George Lucas apparently failed to do to his own saga with the prequels more than a decade ago - he made this fictitional world feel fresh again. The Force Awakens is a total blast.

It was also part of Pepsi's conditions they had to OK the director

I went to the 1:20pm showing this afternoon. Another member had posted a spoiler in the wrong thread and that ruined part of my experience. I voted 3/5 but that was being generous. I have seen all the previous films at the theater and this was the first time that I left disappointed.

I've seen it twice, will check it once more before the purchase on Blu. I graded it with four stars. Thoroughly enjoyed the film but I do have some issues with it.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread (away with you, spoilers!) but that's the first time I've seen that mentioned in open discussion. Looks like it wasn't a big problem for (most) folks, in the end? Or have there been lots of spoilered complaints about it that I've missed? Not being snarky, I'm genuinely curious.

Oh, and I presume there's no Disney logo whatsoever at the start?

You presume correctly.

I did not miss the 20th/21st Century Fox intro at all.
