Even having the original colorist can be overrated. Unless it's someone specifically assigned by the filmmakers like Lou Levinson (Spielberg, Lucas, etc) it can be a tossup. A lot of the time the transfers are just signed off on by a rep - not even the cinematographer or director. And they'll just watch a random scene or two here and there, not the film start to finish. Levinson remarked that some colorists had no idea what the movie looked like projected, they were just trying to make it look good on their monitors. It's changed a lot since the mid-2000s where everything went to DI with the filmmakers involved, but for older films? Best guess. |
