Maybe some are privy to more technical details, but it doesn't look like this will be HDR graded. If it was, the press release's technical list would state it. And the cover makes no mention either.
And no Atmos because it was only mixed in 5.1. |

It says Ultra HD Premium on the cover and I think that automatically implies HDR.

Be interesting if it wasn't though. If it was SDR with P3 (mapped into 2020, natch) and upscaled to 2160p (which would help to retain the 2K colour resolution of the master) then you'd basically have the theatrical 2K master on a disc, compression and slightly reduced resolution (3996x2160 to 3840x2160) notwithstanding.

![]() I think the UK will have this too. Life of Pi in the UK has also a better cover than US one. Last edited by Pieter V; 03-16-2016 at 06:38 PM. |

I just read an interview with colorist Stephen Nakamura: http://www.definitionmagazine.com/jo...-ready-for-hdr
He originally graded Joy in HDR. Quote:

Nakamura graded the original DI for X-Men DOFP, I wonder if he did the HDR pass too? Seeing as it's not a drastic example of the technology that would certainly be in keeping with his overall philosophy towards HDR. And I love his comment about how loads of DPs are asking him about it, which I think proves beyond doubt that this tech is not simply a case of unleashing everything that was already there on the neg/RAW data: it needs taste, judgement and guidance in order to be deployed properly and not as a gimmick. It's about serving the story and the vision of the filmmakers, first and foremost. |

But there's still the issue of having someone other than the filmmakers or the original colourist doing the regrading, which for me remains a valid concern regarding older films. If you get someone with taste at the controls then hopefully you'll get a subtle extension of what was originally made, but if we get some gormless tech who likes to twiddle his knobs to maximum it could end up being a horror show. |
