I didn't lose my job, in July I got a pay raise instead of a cut, I don't buy & sell stocks as a form of income, and I didn't buy a house I couldn't afford with a loan I never should have signed (ARM). Inflation has not grown exponentially, and other than the news media gnashing their teeth the only sign of 'problems' I saw personally was that gas was $4 a gallon.

"The potential that something bad might happen" is no more prevelant than it was 5 years ago. The difference now, is that people are paying attention. And panicking. And small businesses are suffering because people are scared to spend money because "something bad might happen"; making it easier for something bad to happen.
