It's lowered prices all around and has caused studios on both sides to step up their game in quality and extra features. Case in point - do you really think that Sony would have come out with a new and improved version of The Fifth Element (complete with free trade-in program for those that bought the first version) a mere year later if not for the format war? I honestly don't believe that would have been the case.
