Happy to hear everyone is enjoying this disc as much as I did. I was worried that my love for this movie made me exaggerate my impressions. Turns out I'm not crazy after all! [emoji14]

My copy is in transit via the Atlantic Ocean so I'll not see it for a week or more yet. I'm greatly looking forward to it. Bladerunner justified every penny I've spent on OLED, Atmos and UHD blu-ray ... Starship Troopers a few weeks later just adds to that feeling.

Uhhhhhhhhhh

First, this movie is fantastic.

Second, this movie looks fantastic. I couldn't tell if it was miniature work or CGI or both, for 80% of the visual effects shots. Obviously large swaths of bugs were digital, but they blended into practical full-scale effects seamlessly. Or at least at the distance I was watching it (where grain wasn't an issue at all, either).

Probably my favourite UHD catalogue title, behind Blade Runner. But tonight I'm watching ET, Close Encounters, and Split; so that may change.

Oh the irony of describing "real" and Denise Richards in the same post.

Agreed, this had the best blend of cgi and practical effects of any movie from the '90s. Hell it looks better than most new movies! THIS is how the Star Wars prequels should have looked. This is what got me into Starcraft and why I wanted THAT instead of the terrible Warcraft movie.

All, talked to Sony Support about the UHD version only doing HD playback. They are looking into it.

I don't want to get all off topic about games on this board, but if you've never played Helldivers check it out. It's Starship Troopers to the nth degree... extremely intense and very polished/balanced.

I was sorry that some of the criticism regarding this new UHD edition got to me before I actually sat down and watched it. I was expecting to be supremely disappointed based on those posts, but in the end I was greatly surprised. This is an amazing upgrade. As some posts have mentioned, it's the space shots that benefit the most — but details are improved across the board. There are some scenes where film grain is more noticeable, but they are hardly (IMHO) reason to denigrate the release as a whole.

The CGI and models look much improved with HDR for the most part, though some overly ambitious bits are what they are. My jaw was pretty much on the floor the whole movie though. I put the BD in afterward and literally laughed after a handful of seconds and stopped bothering to compare.

Flesh tones looked perfectly fine to me, and I use Warm 2 like good little boys and girls should. Casper Van Dien is one tan ass dude which might be throwing people off, and some lighting is very warm, but in general I thought flesh tones on Busey, Ironside and the rest looked perfectly normal and lovely. I literally have zero to complain about with this disc, I'd give it a 5/5 if I reviewed shit on here.

Yeah.....It's a good thing you don't do reviews on this site otherwise I'd probably buy more crap than I already do.

Geoff already answered you well but I just want to reiterate the "give it a week" thing. When I first switched to warm mode I thought it looked atrocious and swore it couldn't be accurate, no way could it be! I forced myself to give it a week though and lo and behold, switching back to medium or whatever suddenly looked terribly blue and off. You really have to adjust to it, give it time.

I myself did the other way around and switched from warm to medium on my display. But you can adjust to basically any setting so whatever looks better in the end is fine. A lot of movies still push warm colors so you get the best of both I think.

Was thinking if I should import this or wait for a possible local release. Then I realised it's a Disney title over here in northern Europe. Import it is.

I mean, you can adjust to anything yes. The point though is that warm is most accurate. More or less depending on the brand (my Samsung is extremely accurate on Warm 2 according to review site tests), but 95% of the time the closest to 6500k. Most people want to see the movies as they are intended to be seen, so the goal should be getting used to warm mode.

Just gave this a spin. As usual, the early comments critical of the PQ were completely unfounded.

This is only the second time I've ever watched this movie -- the other time was in theaters in 1997. At the time I remember being annoyed by the "bait and switch" quality of the marketing -- which billed the movie as a STAR WARS style space adventure, yet delivered something very different. I'm pleased to say the movie works much better for me now -- its barbs of satire connecting time and again. Verhoven's musings on the nature of fascism resonates better for me today than it did back then. I still say in ROBOCOP Verhoven does many of the same things better -- but still -- that's very good company to keep.

Fine detail is very strong, with most sequences at the outpost on Planet P looking practically perfect. Other scenes, particularly opticals, have a stronger presence of film grain. Overall I would say this UHD mastering reminded me a lot of THE FIFTH ELEMENT -- also a Sony release, also a 1997 film.

Very glad I gave this film a second chance, Sony has rewarded us with yet another fine catalog release.

Alright, gonna order it too. Not a fan of the film, but I think it's alright. I like Robocop, Total Recall and Basic Instinct more that this one.

If you think "it's alright" then I'd say go get it.

Btw I really hope those titles you mentioned also get the UHD treatment rather sooner than later, those (and Hollow Man) are all the Verhoeven films I need.
