This trailer for Tomb Raider looks like another video game bomb waiting to drop in the cinemas. It also bares the same kind of aesthetic as the post 90's Tomb Raider films, so nothing different or fresh is on display here. Not to mention Vikander comes off as wooden and bored. Very disappointing indeed.
How does this look anything like the old films. It doesnt share a single beat with them?

This is far more gritty, believable and Alicia actually looks like she's doing her own stunts. How does she look board? So a character not smiling in every scene automatically equates to boredom? Shes not made it that far in Hollywood yet so isnt phoning it in like scarjo or jlaw.

What's wrong with a selfish Lara? Having her family assets under threat and going on a one woman vindictive rampage? Instead it's all "save the world" this and that. Lara wouldn't care about saving the world, it's no fun. Lara wants to have fun. Skip the origin story. Give us a Tomb Raider like 2008 Rambo. I may or may not have any clue what I'm talking about.

Has he Tomb Raider franchise always revolved around world-ending conflicts? I haven't played any of the Tomb Raider games and it's been ages since I watched the Angelina Jolie flicks so I have next to no knowledge about the source material but it'd be nice to see a more interpersonal conflict for a change instead of your run of the mill blue beam in the sky.

Er, kind of. Generally speaking I don't really consider Lara a heroine. She's an adrenaline junkie who murders people and animals, and steals priceless artefacts for the thrill of it (or at least this used to be the case - since 2006 onwards, she's done it to follow in her father's footsteps). The world-saving stuff is secondary. Nine tens out of ten, the villain she's competing with turns out to be a maniac intent on resurrecting an ancient civilisation or something, so Lara foils their plans before heading home for tea.

The trailer definitely seems to be over-emphasising the 'save the world' angle. Even in the 2013 reboot (upon which the film's based), her prime motivation was survival.

Dude, I'll give you some points on your observations on Assassin's Creed. I felt like there were a few things missing and it shows towards the middle transition. He went from fighting it to embracing it a bit too fast. It needed the scene I assume they cut for theatrical release. I think this is where movies like this fail. Because instead of getting the audience invested in the characters, they fast track the story and amp up the action. That being said, how can anyone Monday Morning Quarterback when all we've seen is a trailer

If it turns out to be good then of course props, but the trailer itself was not impressive at all. Granted, the marketing system in general for films have declined in quality lately. It just doesn't look that great so far.

I pose this question. Was Rhona Mitra unavailable?
She's been in action flicks and done well, has charisma and personality and is actually British. She would have been a good Croft.

Lovely Rhona's not the Lara they're looking for with this incarnation.

You've got to be joking? Hollywood studio actually casting a woman over 40 to spearhead a potential new action-adventure franchise? They probably thought Alicia Vikander was on the edge of being too old at 28!

But an aging man is perfectly viable a la Iron Man, James Bond, and Expendables which was balls to the wall in Metamucil... right?

Yup, total double standards. I will say this though, we are seeing less of that in the non-blockbuster franchises ala Charlize Theron's casting in Atomic Blonde an Mad Max, so I'll give hollywood that much credit.

Being precise with all digital controls is kinda difficult though, the PC version didn't even let you use a mouse for crying out loud.

These days Hollywood has this annoying obsession with casting the most prestigious actor they can get rather than the best fit for the role.

Yeah, it sucks. I'm aware. It was different in the with action flicks in the 80s and 90s, granted these were indie action movies. Plus we had a few older ladies headline action flicks for studios and were successful in some fashion. I guess with Hollywood, it's all about getting the dollar, dollar bills however they can.

But, a lot of these action flicks these days are headlined by these young pretty boy male models and supermodel types.
I prefer my action heroes/heroines with some muscle/fitness and can display some personality, charisma and a sense of humor which A LOT are missing especially the ladies. It seem that they're are so super serious, stone faced and personality/charisma free.

Nope, it has sometimes dabbled in it, but it isn't really the focus. Even when it is present it isn't really the driving force or the main thing, it has remained more of a side thing when it shows up. Lara at the end of the reboot is also meant to be a bit psychotic, which I doubt they will go with this time. She also doesn't wield two pistols in the reboot outside of one call back moment. She is more about the bow and sneaking to stab her victims in the head with a knife.

This looks like a combo of the last two games with a dash of the old films to me (the comment about taking two and how it is delivered). It however looks rather cheap and terrible to me. I was hoping this trailer would sell me but everything i've seen about this film just seems off to me.

Rhona would have been a good fit a decade or more ago. Given the age of the character in the origins based on the games she is 21, and Rhona is 41 it would looks silly trying to pass her off as a 21 year old. Now if they where going for a story not about her origins and when she was a more seasoned explorer, sure that would be seemingly a good casting decision. But that isn't the story they have chosen to go with.

Been a big fan of the games since the first one released so i'm probably being harsher or kinder then I should be. Really hope the film is all kinds of awesome, but the trailer has kept my expectations rather low.

A seasoned Lara played by an experienced actress like Mitra or Ferguson would have an understudy character she's grooming as her partner (and not necessarily her successor) or who more fittingly for her character is simply tagging along and needs to learn the ropes for whatever storyline reason.

It would give us a more believable Lara instead of a kid (not saying Vikander's a kid but she just reminds me of Emilia Clarke in Terminator Genisys, who was simply too fresh faced and "cute" to play Linda Hamilton's Sarah), it would show off how badass Lara is as she teaches her sidekick and would provide some organic humour.

and then people would complain about it being a sidekick story and not a Lara story

If you guys are having such a hard time with understanding the story or what kind of Lara this is, go play the reboot game or watch the cutscenes of it. The reason it did so well, is it was pretty grounded for what it is. It was one of the first games I have seen where you kill people but there seems to be real consequences.

In the game, Lara is young and inexperienced. She gets pulled into the middle of this unknown war to find some artifact, and soon in is forced to kill to survive. After her first kill you see the effect it had on her, and soon it becomes second nature. However, after the story she deals with PTSD of having to kill so many people like any normal human being would after such a traumatic event. It's one of the major faults in games when characters are literally serial killers who kill tons of guys without batting an eye. By getting a young actress and going with a movie based on the remake game so closely they can create a believable story of someone caught up in something they don't fully understand and then having to deal with it.
