Right, but I guess the point is why didn't they do a standard BD release as they did with Close Encounters? Probably some random metrics analysis but who knows.

So I finally saw this over the weekend, and >wow< was I mindboggled by how fantastic the image looked, for a film I wouldn't have expected to receive this much care.
The finish was amazing. The grain structure beautifully detailed. I enjoyed the movie more than I've ever enjoyed it before solely due to this. |

Sony knows that there are 999,999,999,934 copies of Starship Troopers on Blu-Ray that were not sold. I can literally find it at 7-11 stores and gas stations around here. WalMart, Target, Best Buy, local grocery stores, and even Big Lots have piles of it. That being said, the 4K master of the film was done recently and long after the MI4K line was ended, so no new BD was made from the new master, because it obviously wasn't a good idea to do so.

Yep, the simplest possible answer for there not being a BD re-release is that it didn't sell well enough first time around. People might then think "well, why remaster in 4K and release it on UHD as that's an even smaller market?!?" but the point may well be that because UHD is already a nerdy niche of a nerdy niche this sort of remastered title would appeal more to us nerdy nerds. They wuz right!!

It seems like every time I watch a Sony UHD I haven't seen it becomes my new favourite disc, obviously this is no exception. Even after all the praise on here I still didn't think this particular film could look this good, it might even top Pacific Rim as an HDR showcase as well.
I'm also, in a completely selfish way, kind of glad there's no remastered 1080p disc, because going from the old blu-ray transfers to this is like going from DVD to blu-ray. |

This is Off Topic, BUT as I would love this movie in UHD, I wanted to ask if UHD discs also have region codes? I am from Germany and wanted to buy a Sony UHD Player soon, will I be able to play UHDs released on the US market or are there the same regional restrictions in place as before? I am just sure I read somewhere that you can play all UHD discs released worldwide on a UHD player, can somebody please help me? If there are region codes, are there already region free UHD players out?

On the plus side, the included bluray, although not remastered, doesn't have the editing error. My old one did and I never replaced it.
On a side note, I have a question for you 4K guys. I recently bought a cheap uhd player at Wally World so that I may benefit from Atmos and DTS:X on uhds downscaled to 1080p. I've been tweaking the picture for the uhd player to my tv to get it to look as close to my blurays look, and for the most part have been successful. I've been watching Starship Troopers for like two days now and love the way it looks. I did notice , however, one little scene that looked a bit off. Now, I'm aware that uhds are different from blurays and they have the hdr programmed into them which might alter the image if downscaling to 1080p. The scene in question is this one... [IMG_1597.jpg It looks almost monochromatic or unfinished on the uhd version on my display. The picture quality my iPad took isn't great, the exhausts look a little more blue on my tv rather than teal like my iPad photographed. Could this be something the hdr takes into effect on a 4K display vs 1080p? Here's the same scene from the bluray IMG_1594.jpg I apologize for the poor picture quality, but I think you'll be able to see the color variations in the ships from the bluray version. Bottom line, how does that scene look on a 4K tv with hdr? Any insight from you 4kers would be appreciated and thanks in advance. |
