Desaturated with exploding contrast in the New York stuff, yeah, but I thought the BD was going for a similar look. After that with rare exception I thought the UHD blew the BD away. It's a really aggressive and bright HDR pass though, which some people hated.

Haven't watched this yet but Universal seems to be using HDR pretty aggressively on catalog stuff while being pretty reserved on their new releases, at least in my experience.

For the most part yeah, though E.T. didn't have aggressive HDR at all. Wonder if that's because of a call to Spielbergo or because it's real film or because it's a classier picture. I dunno. The Mummy movies and Van Helsing are like amusement park rides by comparison, but hey... so are the movies.

lol yeah, good point. Still need to check out ET, just haven't been in the mood yet. The Bournes don't exactly melt eyeballs with their HDR, but a couple of them do have pretty substantial changes to their color schemes. (Supremacy now sans green tint, Legacy apparently desaturated to the point of lifelessness.)

ET had HDR in the right places, the lights on the cars at the beginning plus the running lights on the spaceship were proper bright. Incidentally, after my latest HDR recal tweakery I pulled up the scene when matey gets home from football practice and it doesn't look as 'dusky' as it previously did. I'm quite sure it's still not as bright as the BD in terms of APL but now it looks spot on, rather than too dark or too bright.

Apollo 13 is another recent example of Uni's HDR pulling down a darker, duskier look for a film, the scenes of the people on the ground during lift-off now look like they're taking place in late afternoon, not "13:13" in the blazing midday sun. The more I watch that disc the more I'm not liking it, for various reasons, but it doesn't do to dwell on these things and I've still got that wonderful remastered Blu as a primary viewing source.

I recently picked up Apollo 13 on UHD BD and still have to give it a spin. Unfortunate how some BDs are preferred over UHD BD version.

As much as I love the format I do have to say I can't think of any BDs worse than the DVD, but I know of several UHDs worse than the BD. Keep it on the QT or we'll all end up in the DMZ.

There aren't BDs which have been DNR'd otherwise botched such that a comparison to DVD really doesn't mean anything? If a BD is trash, then it's trash irrespective of any comparison to a prior format. Same will apply to UHD/HDR.

That said, are you certain that there are several preferable BDs already?

I prefer watching the DVDs of Star Treks 3-6 than the DNR'ed Blu-rays. True story.

For me there's a few. Mostly Lionsgate titles where they used a film-out or whatever instead of the DI. 3:10 to Yuma and Lincoln Lawyer in my case. I also hated how X-Men: First Class looked and sold that one. It was weirdly warm and had poor compression.

I wish I had the DVDs myself to compare that. Might agree with you.

Even the best DVDs don't hold up on a large screen. I own the Star Treks on Bluray (also might have the DVDs) but haven't watched them.

Now that I know they were DNR'd I certainly won't watch them and wait for them to be remastered (hopefully in UHD).

Yes yes, all hail our projektor overlords. But on my piddly 65" a DVD is perfectly serviceable.

I have to say, a lot of transfers I considered amazing back in the early days of bluray, 2008-2010, when I was watching 9' away on a 50", now look somewhat less than perfect at 7.5' from a 75".

Then again, transfers overall have increased in quality, but man, in 2007, I remember Pirates of the Caribbean 1 looking >mindblowing< and seeing it a month ago I thought, "This could use some work"

Yes, I would think so. I wasn't being snobbish, I was really just conveying both my disappointment about the DNR and appreciation of learning the bad news. I love the Star Trek films (well the even-numbered ones at least) and I'd rather wait until a better version is available.

I only watch DVDs on my plasma - pretty much unwatchable projected for me too.

Very impressive disc, but sometimes problematic. I think HDR is a little bit too aggressive, and the whole thing is too bright. Not just highlights, but entire image. Some shots can look... weird. Processed, filtered, DNRd and sharpened. Naomi's face can be extremely detailed in one scene just to look smoothed to death in another, but overall it's great.

The only thing I can't decide is different color grading in the jungle scenes, I think I prefer Blu-ray, but on the other hand UHD looks more natural and realistic.

Am I theonly one who noticed banding when the ship approach Skull Island in the fog?
