I had always been under the impression it was SEVEN figures. Either way, ridiculous.

Movies this popular don't get forgotten, but they do go unreleased if the rights-holder puts up a brick wall. Just look at what happened to say, The Manchurian Candidate. Or all of those movies that Susan Hart has. Popularity alone won't fix anything. Rubinstein's mind must be changed.

Rubinstein probably sneaked in your house and stole it. Did you check around for a ransom note? “If you ever wanna see Dawn of the Dead on HD again, pay me a billion dollars!”

Didn’t that get a Criterion release?

The Korean company Stereo Pictures Media and DNext Media paid $6 mil to convert it to 3-D, so someone out there will eventually bite. My question is, did they make a new 4K negative scan for the 3-D conversion that already exists for someone to license? Because if a scan exists and is obtainable, that would offset a lot of the production costs.

I have no idea what the heck you’re talking about but you’ve been crying about this in multiple threads multiple times. You clearly want this so bad so why don’t you just get one off eBay for $50 or so that it goes for? At least it’s not as bad as some other OOP titles that go for hundreds

Yes. It was locked down from the mid 60s through the 80s, not today. It's just the case I have read the most about in books (apart from The Day the Clown Cried).

Wikipedia now has stuff in their article that supposedly discredits Ebert, et al, but Wikipedia.

Yeah, I don’t know anything about that movie tbh. I do know it’s popular though. But one thing I will say is that the Horror genre has probably the most hardcore fan base. Which is why I think we’ll see it released again sooner rather than later. Again, not sure how much exactly this guy is asking for but I’m sure someone will give in.

No one's going to give in if the price is too high. I think he's probably still deluded about costs being worth what they were back in the heyday of DVD circa 2004, where companies would sell 100,000 copies of horror movies, and thus paying huge amounts would actually be worth it. These days, it seems like they're often very lucky to sell 10k (for a wide release), meaning they'd probably be making what, 10 dollars per unit? Plus marketing, paying duplicators, paying for artwork, paying for special features, etcetcetc.

Why not take out a 7-figure loan and do it yourself then?

That’s the worst. I had this happen with disc 1 in my Halloween 15 disc set and it still bugs me. Every once in a while I start going through cases looking for it but I always end up disappointed.

you forgot the one other thing that will hold companies back. DOTD was already released on Blu-ray and it's a decent looking copy which many fans have already bought. sure the die hard fans will spring for a new transfer but many will pass especially if the sell through price is high. the glory days are past and while some titles do continue to sell the numbers aren't as high. if they were then studios wouldn't be licensing titles they'd put them out and make all the money.

That hasn’t stopped Scream Factory from re-releasing all these titles. Arrow has been following the same path as well. And pretty much all those had blu rays that are still in print.

yes but obviously it was cheap enough for them to justify doing that. the number of copies needed to be sold to cover costs is likely fairly low. if they had to spend $1,000,000 up front on just the movie rights then there is no way they would be releasing stuff like say CYBORG which has a decent quality release already. they also appeal to niche collectors who are aware of the releases and are willing to pony up the extra money for new special features etc (ie hard core fans). if it was cost effective for those companies yo mentioned to release DOTD then you can bet they would be all over it.

It isn't all about blu-ray sales. It's about having a remaster available for streaming. So it'll still be done eventually, but yes, profits are down due to declining physical media sales.

That’s two different arguments though. There’s no doubt about it that a new release of DOTD will sell well, regardless if there was a previous edition or not. Now, arguing if they would be able to recover all the money they paid for it is another story.

well no the ability to make their money back and turn a profit is totally what this discussion is about. why would a company do it if they didn't think they would make money. business 101. knowing that there are already copies out there certainly would factor in the decision though it may not be a big factor for this film. it's still a consideration. i'll throw in a for instance. SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA. back in the day Anchor Bay did release this as an official dvd. it didn't do very well and disappeared because there were a ton of supposed public domain copies available. just saying to sell copies beyond the true fans has to be taken into consideration if your upfront costs are high. no one has stepped up to the plate on this despite the apparent demand so there must be a reason.
