Americans are VERY influenced by critic reviews and RT scores these days. It's like a total bizarre flip since I was a kid in the 80s-90s-00s when no one gave a rat's ass what critics thought of action films. (You would never know by the love of it in this thread that the original Jolie film is 20% on RT)
Kind of a blanket statement, not all of us are easily influenced by them.

I gave this a 3, because I recognise that the film had some issues and wasn't particularly original, but I had a hell of a good time watching this. It was far better than I was expecting and Vikander owned the role - a really great piece of casting. Aside from that, I thought there were some really good set pieces and I loved that they kept
[Show spoiler]Lara's first kill
in.
[Show spoiler]It's a bit unfortunate that the moment was cut short but that they had it at all meant that this 12A movie got pretty real for a moment.

Also,
[Show spoiler]bit weird to have McNulty actually be alive for him to then just die later. His inclusion on the island wasn't really needed except to allow for the cliché of the protagonist having a reason to begrudgingly do the bad guy's bidding.

Would really like a sequel as I loved Vikander and there's certainly potential for a sequel to be even better.

Also - so refreshing to have a blockbuster that doesn't have tenstion-breaking humour scattered throughout every dramatic moment.

These people like to seek consensus, in a "look at me, I'm part of the majority so I know I'm right" kind of way. I wonder how many of them had the immediate reaction to like or dislike a movie, but when the Tomatometer offered a different majority opinion, they immediately changed their minds.

I remember in the early days of the internet where I posted that I thought Highlander was merely an average movie that had lots of potential but failed to reach most of it. Some guy laughed at me and insulted me, citing that I must be the only person on the planet who didn't think Highlander was one of the greatest movies of all time. I wonder if his name was Ricky Bobby.

It's not just the moviegoers, but the film "critics" as well. Not necessarily the ones that still appear in print, but the internet-only reviewers, either looking to fit in with the majority or to deliberately oppose the majority to get more clicks. It would be interesting to see the results of an alternate reality where these people review films without knowing beforehand how everyone else reviewed them.

Why are people complaining about Lara's puzzle solving and climbing/archery skills because the opening act showed her operating as a bicycle courier? You people are aware that she's a woman in her 20s and wasn't born 5yrs before the film starts, right? I mean, it's like watching Armour of God and complaining that they never showed Jackie Chan's character learning martial arts.

If we don't get a steelbook in the US, I'm pretty sure someone overseas will offer one. I'm hoping for the side-shot of her holding the climbing ax is the front.

Because being young, fit, and active doesn't equate to having multiple unrelated set of skills?

Im sorry but I dont count the Jolie movies as recreated original game films either.

There's almost no correlation between RT scores and box office. However, when it comes to me, I know how much people can be affected by hearing review scores, so I always avoid seeing RT/metacritic/whatever scores until after I've seen the movie, and I'm often surprised. If a movie is scored highly, people tend to overhype and end up disappointed. If a movie is scored low, they tend to focus on the negative details and miss out on the good parts. Reviews can only hurt the experience if you were already planning to go. I also avoid trailers as soon as I know I want to see something as well. The less you know about a movie going in, the better your experience is going to be. This can be particularly exciting if it's a franchise you're already committed to before the first trailer comes out. For example I haven't watched any marvel or star wars trailer in years before watching the movies. It's always fun to go back and watch the trailers after seeing the movies and be so surprised at what they'd include in there, such as
[Show spoiler]The Hulk
in Thor Ragnarok.

The movie showed Richard teaching Lara various things, including archery. Most likely puzzle solving was a big part of the stuff he regularly taught her. Her climbing ability comes from her clearly spectacular workout routine.

lol I didn't say anyone wanted it (though that game had good sales and tons of critical acclaim, so...), but that doesn't change the fact that that game is what this movie is based on

Because they wanted a young Lara to jump-start a new franchise. By taking the best elements from the new game series (which are fantastic) it was the best way to draw from that as it's the most recent iteration of the character and still fresh in the fanbase's minds. I am open to them taking elements from the original game series, (as I agree that the Jolie duology did a shite job in even getting Lara's look right), to make a clever hybrid that is both current and nostalgic.

Right, and I have no issue with her choosing a bow and arrow as her preferred weapon of choice. That makes sense, considering she's been doing it since her youth.

As far as rock climbing...you use your core more than your arms or legs when climbing like that. And her core was badly injured. I highly doubt she would have been able to make that climb, considering when she gets to the top, it's causing so much pain that she collapses. Also, climbing is a majority of grip strength in your finger tips. Working out by punching and kicking really isn't anything like rock climbing. (I say this as someone who rides bikes a lot, and also dabbled in climbing/bouldering for a while). There's no connection between them.

Also, the new games are much more critically acclaimed than the old games. Yes the old games are classics, but they were much weaker in storytelling, and they weren't as good of a role model for young women either. This Lara isn't a supermodel, she looks like a real person.

Agreed. We could have had the age and aesthetic (outfits) of the new TR game/this movie, with the idea of it being an origin movie, but then have the story/setting from the original game/s
That personally, I think, would have resulted in a much better movie imo as I find this new origin story/game, incredibly weak personally.

Although im in the camp that does not like the casting of Lara even if her body is completely correct to the new game.

Her boxing was clearly not the only source of her workouts. She has a very strong core and upper body strength. Yes she was injured, but come on, this is a movie, based on a game. She was healed overnight. She ends up in much worse shape in the game, lol.

Well look at the body proportions, but also, look at the promotional art for the game, not the in game model. Obviously tech couldn't keep up with the art back then.
