You have to rise above it, there is no other way. Let the games speak for themselves. Games sell more by word of mouth than by advertising in the long term anyway. Actually, Gears was heavily advertised and received universal acclaim. Halo also was heavily advertised and received universal acclaim.

Word of mouth is something that would have made sense 15 years ago. With numerous gaming websites and sites like Metacritic, not too mention the insane advertising its hard to say games like Gears sold by word of mouth.
