I just got the email. Seems pretty clear we'll still have access to the US store, it'll just have to be through the Australian site.

Anyone have any idea how the upcoming GST stuff will effect buying stuff from sites like WowHD? I buy a shit ton of blu-rays/dvds from them. Will they just add in the 10% at checkout or like Amazon will they just stop selling to Australians full stop?

I know there's the wowhd.com.au version of the site, but all the stuff still comes from the US so with this Amazon announcement I'm super worried.

And the VALUE of the site on our purchases following the Amazon changes ......

Not everyone is keen to do pricey third party shippers.

And with retail shopping in the doldrums in Oz..... gee when no one bothers with Myer or DJs......and with higher petrol prices.... the worlds worst NBN.... can we find an easy way to get a US residency visa ?

Ain't all of this a kick in the pants? It's funny how these things just happen and it just passes through, with all our politicians agreeing on a thing that the general public doesn't. It beats the purpose of House of REPRESENTATIVES.

At least I have dual Australian/English citizenship. Does keep me out of Parliament.

It's worth remembering that Amazon sell lots of others things besides DVDs & Blu Rays and Base.com sells lots of other merchandise as well. It should not come as a surprise that both would be way over the $75,000 amount.

Given that WowHD have an Australian URL they may already be charging GST. Furthermore, WowHD only sell DVDs, Blu Rays, Vinyl & CDs. I doubt they come anywhere the $75,000. Ditto other stores that do the same.

As far as WowHD and other sellers I think it is best to just wait and see. Contacting them and making a fuss might scare them even though they are not affected by this and may encourage them the drop Australia off their selling list.

That sad reality is we are going to have to change our shopping habits. Besides being furious about this whole fiasco which I blame on the LNP/ALP Coalition, I'm in utter despair. I've been buying from Amazon since 1999. It works so well on so many levels for me and now I'm going to have so search the internet for what I want.

Talking the whole issue over with my partner tonight over dinner he said that he thought that Amazon was playing ball (i.e. applying the GST on their international sites for Australia) because they wanted to push us onto their Australian site which is not performing well. I will be loathed to use Amazon Australia but if it is a much better price than anywhere else I will - don't cut off your nose to spite your face. But if I'm paying a few dollars more using an overseas site I will give them priority.

Also, don't be surprised if in 2 or 3 years time Amazon does start to allow Australians to use their other sites if Amazon Australia is still a non-goer. There problem will be though, that they would have lost a lot of goodwill and that will take a long time to rebuild.

Got this reply from Wowhd after emailing to ask about the situation.

"We will continue shipping to Australia however the prices must be updated."

So looks like they're just going to apply the GST. Thank goodness.

I don't have a problem with paying more. Everyone prefers to pay less but that is not always possible.

As I have said numerous times I can make savings elsewhere and I would rather pay the GST through WOW any day than through Amazon who are making things very difficult for us when they didn't have to.

They do, but prices are all over the place. Some are under $30, some are more like 50 or 60. Disney and Criterion are especially overpriced.

They have some crazy bargains. I recently got Dark Angel and Boondock Saints for a measly $11 each.

One thing though, the interface is an absolute prick. You need to type in the title then let the little dropdown window come up and browse through that, if you click the search button you'll go to a page where half the options aren't even available and usually what you're looking for won't be there.

I've found most things on the WowHD NZ side are usually the cheap UK titles in the Warehouse bargain bins..
