The listening area is not large enough where you can move the mic more than a few inches and still be inside it. It's basically the "box" of space your head occupies while you're sitting watching the movie. This is where you're supposed to position your mic for an Audyssey setup. If you move the mic 2 or 3 feet then you're well outside the listening area, and therefore the distance settings measured by Audyssey will be incorrect, which will in turn cause the timing to be off in the listening area. It may or may not be off enough to make a significant difference in the listening area. If you want any of your speakers to be louder, why not just turn up those specific speakers to your liking? At least this way the distance settings in your receiver will still be correct.
