I just got this the other night. An amazing upgrade over the DVD! It looks so much better on Blu-ray with it's intended theatrical aspect ratio. Glad to see the helicopter shadows and blades are gone!

I noticed the pinkish teniis ball though. Odd, since the color seems so accurate elswhere.

Ok so my apologies for re-opening a year-old thread, but I am interested in purchasing this movie and yet every review I have read and every comment on forums fails to mention one thing, is the 5.1 sound a simulated stereo or did they actually take the music score and remix it for TRUE stereo, or are there any sound effects in real stereo?

One of the things that I feel is a genuine rip-off is the studios not specifying if a movie has real separated stereo sound or simulated from a mono track when they offer a 5.1 track. To me, listing a movie as 5.1 and using just a simulated stereo is very false advertising and very wrong, at least there should be something on the back cover that lets us know which it is. There is one comment in this thread where someone says it is kind of like mono, but that doesn't give me a real good idea. So my question is for anyone who owns this, is there anything in the soundtrack that is true separated stereo?

I'm no sound engineer so correct me if I'm wrong, but I would assume that any movie that was orginally mono and that has a 5.1 DVD/Blu-Ray release would be "simulated stereo." After all, the source material is mono.

It's been "forever and a day" since I watched this so I don't remember how it sounded, but in general most older titles that I own that have a "brand new 5.1 mix" still sound pretty front heavy.

I know The Shining was originally mono, so I'm assuming it's 5.1 mix is "simulated."

Regardless of the soundtrack, it's an excellant movie. Don't let its "mono roots" discourage you.

This movie so deserves a digibook. I'm still waiting for a $9.99 price drop.

Well, Kubrick thought the U.S. cut played too long and dragged in spots, so he himself cut the shorter "international" version that played in Europe and other territories. And he's right -- it does drag in wayyy too many places. The shorter version is his preferred cut.

My $ .02 on the audio is it was my FIRST experience with PCM 5.1, and it blew me away !!!! First I had lossy 5.1 (DVD/DVD-A), then Dolby True HD, and DTS HD Master, then PCM 5.1, and when you have to lower the volume to keep from being evicted, THAT'S the audio choice for me !!!

What scares me is a bathroom with clear windows right next to the toilet and the owner that doesn't put up blinds or curtains.

it was a "work-in-progress" but there are blinds up now (until I can find curtains to match the theme)

If the studio still has the original elements used to create the soundtrack (music, dialogue effects) (effectively, the "multitracks") a new true stereophonic or surround mix could be created. (Also if a movie had a Dolby Surround soundtrack, it had a 4.0 mix before encoding into Dolby, and this still may exist in discrete channel form , etc.)

If a film was first presented in mono or 2-channel, and they provide a lossless mono or 2-channel option, I usually pick that......

The 5.1 track on The-Shining is essential though, as it's great!

That is not supported by any evidence. Though Kubrick did edit the film (to its extreme detriment, I'd have to disagree with you) for international release after the longer version of the film hit U.S. theatres, he okayed the master used for THE SHINING's subsequent domestic VHS and LaserDisc releases and had the perfect opportunity then to formalize the shorter version as his preferred director's cut, but he did not. All evidence points to Kubrick seeing worth in both cuts, and he never made any official claims that one edit should supercede the other. For me, in a million years, I could never hope to understand someone preferring the shorter version of THE SHINING to the original edit...
